Staffordshire Wildlife Trust Description

Nationally
Our unique organisation is a network of 47 Wildlife Trusts and Wildlife Watch (our junior branch). Together they cover every corner of the UK. The Wildlife Trusts have been speaking out for nature in Britain since 1912 and now have over three-quarters of a million members!

Closer to home
We are a voluntary organisation overseen by an elected Council, employing over fifty staff. Being a charity we are financially dependent to a large extent on the support of our members, both private (over 15, 000) and corporate (about 50). Our work raises awareness about the natural environment in Staffordshire amongst other organisations and individuals. We provide a way for interested people to protect areas of nature conservation value from inappropriate change and encourage good management of valued areas and, where appropriate, the creation of new habitats.

Opportunities
Staffordshire Wildlife Trust offers outstanding opportunities for both young and old to learn about the environment and to explore and enjoy the wonders of nature. From education programmes for schools and short courses for adults to children’s clubs, Wildlife Watch and family events we offer a range of activities which provide a greater understanding of the natural world and encourage involvement in protecting our local environment. Our qualified and experienced staff deliver to a high standard with a flexible approach to ensure we match the specific needs of your group, school or individual interest.

Local to YOU
The Trust has a network of 10 Local Groups, most with a full and varied programme of indoor and outdoor meetings. In addition there are specialist sub-groups that members can join, such as the Staffordshire Bat and Fungus Groups. These groups are open to beginners and experts alike and they provide an excellent way of maximising the benefits of membership. SWT Membership Recruiter, Denise, and our Senior Wildchild Officer, Katie, had a great time at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue's Family Fun Day at the weekend!
Katie said: 'It was an absolutely amazing day, so much for visitors to do and see. We spoke to lots of happy people who had loads of fun taking part in our activities and finding out more about Staffordshire Wildlife Trust."

Chris Jukes spotted this willow tit looking for food at Westport Lake earlier this month.
A lovely photo!

Harvesting some tasty veg this season? Veggie beds are one of the most popular hangouts for worms, so you're helping them & all wildlife in the process, while enriching your soil :). #WildForWorms #WildAboutGardens

This nursery web spider is very common - here's one David Coles of the Trust saw at our Wolseley HQ recently! 🕷️

Woohoo!
Youngsters across North Staffordshire will have the chance to attend completely free sessions designed at getting them outdoors at green spaces across the area thanks to a £106,000 grant from BBC Children in Need.
The funding from BBC Children in Need will allow Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, the county’s largest nature conservation charity, to deliver its Wildlings, Wildfamilies, GetWild and after-school clubs across Stoke-on-Trent and Urban Newcastle-under-Lyme. It ...also means Wildlings sessions at the Trust’s Hem Heath Woods nature reserve can continue.
The hugely popular sessions, which are designed for youngsters as young as six months up to aged 16, take place on a regular basis and offer a wide-range of hands on activities.
Last year, over 3,000 children attended the sessions and this funding will now allow them to continue.

The Trust's Kathryn took this photo of the wonderful fungi on site at our Wolseley Centre HQ, near Rugeley.
On Saturday 6th October (UK Fungus Day) we're holding a Fungi Foray at the centre. We also currently have a fungi trail around the site, too, for you to take part in!

It's tempting to sweep and clear away fallen leaves - but did you know they make an excellent temporary hedgehogs during Autumn?
Why not leave a pile of leaves in your garden to help our hedgehogs? 💚🍂🍃

There's a severe weather warning in place for our county - please be careful when out and about, everyone! 🌧️☔

Please make all the badger dens not so close, to a very busy, dual carriageway. I found it upsetting to find, this beautiful creature the other day. A dead badger on its back.

My sister and 94 year old mother live not far from here. My mother uses a wheelchair and this is a regular outing for her ( and me when I am visiting). The walkways are ideal for wheelchairs and it's wonderful that Mum can get so close to the river and the pools. There's always something interesting for her to enjoy, and we can walk my dog at the same time. There's always someone to chat with, and we all enjoy it. Mum loves to see children in the Wellie Splash.

The toilet facilities are excellent too!

We were delighted to be able to adopt a tree in memory of my father and have a plaque put up for it. Mum always likes to see Dad's apple tree, and we give the plaque a little polish!

And all free! A truly wonderful experience!

Thank you.

My daughter held her 8th birthday party at Westport Lake this morning having a wildwoods party. They thoroughly enjoyed it, den building, mud painting and hide and seek in the woods. Not to mention the camouflage few paints to start. Definately recommend it. Thank you all.

My daughter and I visited Wolesley headquarters yesterday and were very pleased with and impressed by the variety of wild flowers in the recently opened river side meadow area. Some were unknown to us before looking them up. Thanks.

I love visiting the local Wolseley Wildlife Centre with my family. It's can be made to fit what you fancy. Quick visit, long , with or without a picnic. We always take bird seed. Love it

I have grown up near to Westport Lake so have seen many changes over the years but since The Wildlife Trust has taken over it is absolutely amazing. I love it even more. So much work has been done and is still being done . It is attracting more wildlife than ever as well as visitors. Anyone fancying a nice stroll it is roughly 1 mile to walk around the lake, there is also a lovely little playground for the children, or you could just sit on the balcony at the visitor centre with a cuppa and enjoy the view. Thank you for my for my Staffs Wildlife Trusts badge for being a member for ten years !
