Come and hear Alex Hibbert talk about his latest book Polar Eskimo.

In December of 2013, Alex Hibbert led an international quartet of polar travellers to the extreme north of Arctic Greenland. After a huge storm destroyed their intended route to the North Pole in the darkness of winter, instead of retreating, they decided to explore the beautiful but unforgiving region of Avanerriaq, the home of the Polar Eskimos. What followed was six months of harsh education, gripping ad...venture and...twenty unruly sled dogs.
Hibbert takes us on a fascinating adventure into a world few will ever see. From heart-stopping falls through thin ice into frigid water to the bizarre modern politics of Greenland.
He delves into history, their language and way of life and what makes today’s Polar Eskimo special.
Polar Eskimo offers a rare opportunity to glimpse into this distant and private society; one that has a both legendary and violent history plus a controversial and undecided future.
Tickets £4 (redeemable against the cost of Polar Eskimo by Alex Hibbert).
Includes a glass of wine/soft drink.

Join us at stanfords as Robin A.Crawford takes us on a journey to the Outer Hebrides.
Using the seasons to show how the story of peat is also the story of Scotland. From its first uses during the Bronze Age, through the wildlife and folklore associated with the land during the centuries, to its integral role in the making of whisky.
The peatlands of the Outer Hebrides are half land, half water. Their surface is a glorious tweed woven from tiny plants, a habitat rich in wildli...fe, but underneath is layer upon layer of dead mosses transforming into the peat. One can, with care, walk out onto them, but stop and you begin to sink into them. For time immemorial the peatlands have been places – for humans at least – of seasonal habitation but not of constant residence.
In describing the seasonal processes of cutting, drying, stacking, storing and burning he reveals one of the key rhythms of island life, but his study goes well beyond this to include many other aspects, including the wildlife and folklore associated with these lonely, watery places.
Widening his gaze to other peatlands in the country, he also reflects on the historical and cultural importance that peat has played, and continues to play – it is still used for fuel in many rural areas and plays an essential role in whisky-making – in the story of Scotland.

Join us at Stanfords as David Darrell-Lambert talks about all the best places to see birds in the capital.
Predictably for such a beautifully green city, London is rich in bird life – and not just pigeons, gulls and parakeets. Its flagship wetland reserves at Barnes, Woodberry Down and Rainham offer everything from bitterns to avocets, marsh harriers to bar-tailed godwits. But the sharp-eyed can spot wonderful birds in more mundane London settings: over 100 species listed in ...a year on Hampstead Heath alone, from goldcrests to hobbies. Peregrine falcons can be seen in Battersea. A short walk from East India Dock DLR is a secluded backwater frequented by teal and shoveler ducks.
Tickets £4
Redeemable against the cost of Birdwatching London
by David Darrell-Lambert.
Includes a glass of wine / soft drink.

Published in association with the London Wildlife Trust, Birdwatching London reveals the amazing variety of birdlife in London and offers a wonderful suggestions for a day or afternoon out among nature.
About the author:
David Darrell-Lambert runs the Birdbrain UK ornithological consultancy, regularly carrying out bird population surveys for London boroughs and businesses. He lives in the London Borough of Havering.

With its mix of people and culture, our capital is an amazing place, but normally the wildlife gets missed completely. Generally we think we need to be in a rural setting for that. But it’s possible to see snakes, butterflies, deer and an array of different birds in London. Where do you start? Ahead of his event at Stanfords on 4th September, David Darrell-Lambert, author of Birdwatching London tell us about five places to visit, all easy to get to on public transport.

I was amazed by the selection on my first visit to Stanfords! I picked up several books to take home as gifts, took a great horse-drawn carriage tour with a friendly and well-informed guide, and refreshed with a cup of tea and a pastry in the cafe. The staff are exceedingly friendly and knowledgeable too. This is a place not to be missed on any trip to London!
