So the news this week confirms that the authorities are discussing the introduction of zero tolerance for SPEED limit enforcement.
The existing tolerance is that drivers will only get fined/endorsed if they are found doing the speed limit PLUS 10% plus 2. So in a 30 limit currently you would need to be doing 36 to get penallised.
Under the proposed new regime a driver doing 32 and above in a 30 limit would be fined and collect 3 (or more) points. In a 50 limit, driving at 52 ...will attract a fine and 3 points etc etc In a 70 limit doing 72 gets you points and a fine.
The authorities claim this will reduce injuries and deaths.
My view is the OPPOSITE - that drivers scared of collecting points will move their attention and focus onto their speedometer rather than onto the road ahead and around their vehicle. I believe this will inevitably result in HIGHER incidents, more injuries and more deaths.
This is a BAD idea, but clearly the authorities are using STEALTH to achieve a big money WIN, with the increase in INCOME from fines that will inevitably follow this change of policy.
AND having collected points and a fine, the increased cost of the drivers INSURANCE will be VERY SIGNIFICANT to a large population of drivers.
As Trump would say - this is BAD, VERY VERY BAD.
