Stopsley Baptist Church

An extended family, growing and being transformed in Jesus Christ and sharing the Good News wherever we go. . .

Stopsley Baptist Church was birthed in 1848 when a small number of people met in a house in the Stopsley village, establishing a small chapel in 1869. In the 150 years since this beginning, both Stopsley and SBC have changed significantly. The village has now been absorbed into Luton and growth at SBC led to us holding our Sunday services in Stopsley High School. The current Centre was completed in 1994 and is a testament to the vision and commitment of the generations that have served here.


SBC now has around 600 people of all ages and backgrounds meeting together each week with a vision to ‘grow individuals to become God’s people and release them to transform their world’. In total we reach and directly serve a thousand people in the community through our varied ministries: From our daily carer & child groups, our acclaimed youth-mentoring programme, our inter-cultural ministries serving the refugee and asylum seeker community – all the way through to our Seniors work and amazing SBC Kids and 100 strong youth congregation. Add in our wonderful musical productions, simultaneous Alpha courses and 20 plus home groups and you have a glimpse of the varied and vibrant life that is the SBC family.

But that is only part of the story. Missions is at the heart of SBC, here in our community but also in key areas globally that God has called us to focus on; West Africa, China, Pakistan, The Middle East, The Balkans. Full time workers, families being challenged and released, short term teams (almost hundred people last year), Epic – our year out youth team. A commitment to missions and to Church Planting in people, prayer, resources and time that speaks of our passion for God’s world.

All this is supported by a dedicated team of 19 part time & full time staff including a senior management team comprising six Pastoral staff, an Operations Director and an Executive Assistant - each covering an important area of ministry. The staff team is responsible for implementing the strategy outlined by the Eldership and agreed by the church.

Together, we’re striving to become the kind of church described in the Bible, where there’s relevant teaching, heart-felt worship, honest friendships, constant prayer and compassionate care for those in need.
