📣Chart-topping waste and recycling service shortlisted for national awards 🏆🚛🗑
Stroud District Council’s waste and recycling service is one of the best in the country – and now it is in the running for two top accolades.
Together with collection partner Ubico, the council has made it on to the shortlist of the National Recycling Awards 2019, announced today.
... It follows the council being identified by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as the highest performing council for recycling in the south west, and with residents, throwing away the least amount of residual waste in England.
The council and Ubico will find out in June whether it they have won awards for ‘Introduction of Food Waste Collections’ and ‘Cutting Waste to Landfill’.
“We introduced a new collection regime in 2016 to cut landfill and increase recycling, and it is clear that residents have embraced it,” said SDC Head of Community Services, Mike Hammond. “We were really pleased to see that everyone’s hard work means we have been recognised by Defra, and now we’re in the running for these prestigious awards too. “I would like to thank our residents, and SDC waste and recycling staff past and present who have made it such a success.”
One of the council’s five main priorities is to help the community minimise its carbon footprint, adapt to climate change and recycle more. It is the first carbon neutral council in Europe and is aiming for the whole district to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Stroud District Council has been shortlisted in the Food Waste Initiative category for its food waste collection, and in the Local Authority Success – Overall Service Change category for cutting waste to landfill.
Latest Defra figures show that Stroud district residents lead the way in England, putting out an average of just 258.6kg of residual waste per household in 2017/18.
The Defra figures also showed that the council and Ubico have achieved a 61.2 per cent household recycling rate – up a massive 15.7 per cent on the year before.
The NRA awards are run by Materials Recycling World magazine, and a panel of judges will assess all the entries over the coming month and decide on a winner based on the strength of submission and how close it was to meeting the criteria.
All finalists will find out if they have won a National Recycling Award in June. SDC stopped outsourcing its waste and recycling service in 2016 and introduced a compostable food waste collection to its recyclable and residual waste collections with Ubico, in which Stroud District Council is a shareholder.

📣 Allsorts Gloucestershire is named as Stroud District Council’s charity of the year 🥳
Community-spirited Stroud District Council staff have nominated Allsorts as its new 'charity of the year.’
The Stroud-based charity will now be the focus of fundraising efforts for the next 12 months, alongside national events and charities such as Sport Relief and BBC Children in Need.
... In line with the new financial year at the beginning of April all council employees were invited to nominate a local charity, then vote for their favourite from a shortlist using supermarket style tokens, with Allsorts gaining the most votes.
Allsorts supports children with additional needs and their families throughout Gloucestershire. It runs activities including youth clubs, a toddlers group, holiday play schemes and an inclusive sports programme, provide sensory and music rooms for families and hire toys and equipment.
Georgia Boon, Allsorts Chief Executive said: “We are so thrilled that the staff at Stroud District Council have voted for us. Over 320 families across Gloucestershire are members of Allsorts, with many of those living in the Stroud District. We provide thousands of hours of fun to disabled children and young people every year.
This partnership is extra special as 2019 marks our 10th anniversary year and will mean we can continue providing activities and support those who need it. We very much look forward to working with you all!”
Tara Skidmore, chair of Stroud District Council’s charity group said: “It’s great to have a link to a local charity where we can see the money we raise help people in the district. We’re already thinking of how we can raise funds for Allsorts and get involved in the fantastic work they do.”
This is the second year that Stroud District Council has adopted a local charity. Last year council employees raised £3,460 for Sunflowers Suicide Support, after organising fundraising events including a staff rounders match, cake sales and quiz.

📣 This is how you can help shape the future of housing in the Stroud district 🏘🏗
Residents have one more week to give their views on how the council approaches homelessness, housing for older people and its obligations as a social landlord.
Stroud District Council’s Housing Strategy sets out the council’s plans to deliver housing and related services for the next five years.
... The district is home to more than 118,000 residents, a number which is predicted to grow by 18,000 over the next 22 years.
The consultation document acknowledges that the condition, availability and affordability of housing plays a vital role in the overall health of the whole district, and pledges that the provision of decent and affordable housing is a key priority for the council.
There is also the chance to comment on Gloucestershire Rural Community Council’s scoping paper that addresses Community-Led Housing in the district which involves local people playing a leading role in solving housing problems and creating genuinely affordable homes and strong communities.
Pippa Stroud, Stroud District Council’s Policy Implementation Manager said: “Housing is an issue that affects everyone in the district, and our challenge as a council is to target our resources to the greatest effect to support our communities. It’s really important that as many people as possible have their say via the online survey, and help to shape our strategy.”
Stroud District Council is the only local authority in Gloucestershire to manage its own council housing stock, of 5,100 homes, and is coming to the end of a four year council house building programme to build 236 new council homes. It also works with social landlords, community groups and developers to create new homes.
It is also currently in the process of developing the Local Plan to meet a minimum Government target of an additional 12,800 homes in the district from 2020 to 2040. Some 5,800 of those have already received permission.
The consultation runs until Thursday 2nd May and all the details and a link to the online survey can be found at https://www.stroud.gov.uk/drafthousingstr ategy

`Incredible’ – the Stroud District Council staff who have raised thousands for suicide charity 🌻
Generous staff and contractors at Stroud District Council have raised £3,460 over the past 12 months for local charity Sunflowers Suicide Support
Last year the council’s charity group decided to adopt a local charity to be the focus of their fundraising efforts, alongside national charities such as Comic Relief: Red Nose Day and Children in Need.
... Tara Skidmore, chair of Stroud District Council’s charity group said: “When Sunflowers Suicide Support was chosen as our charity of the year we hoped to raise £1,000 on their behalf. We’ve achieved more than three times that amount which is absolutely amazing.”
Fundraising events included a staff rounders match and barbecue, cake sales and a `guess the baby’ quiz.
“We’ve had lots of support from local companies who have helped by providing everything from burgers for the barbeque to raffle prizes,” acknowledged Tara. “One company sent a cheque for £1,000 when they heard about our fundraising plans and an employee at another ran the Stroud half marathon in aid of Sunflowers."
Sunflowers Suicide Support was set up by the family of Randwick resident Pete Morris, after he took his own life in 2016 at the age of 29. Pete’s family found that there was a lack of specialist support in Gloucestershire, so founded the charity with the aims of suicide prevention and postvention - support that helps those bereaved by suicide.
Pete’s sister Abbie Warren said: “What an incredible amount raised by SDC. We would like to thank you all so much for your hard work fundraising and for all your donations. We have lots of plans for 2019 which this money will support. We have just secured a premises locally where we will deliver our Grief Recovery Courses as well as other additional support. We are also in the process of setting up a family support worker service for children bereaved by suicide. We feel really privileged to have been chosen as last year’s SDC charity and are so incredibly grateful this money will be used to help develop our services and continue to support others, being a ray of light shining in their darkness”
Now the year of fundraising on behalf of Sunflowers Suicide Support is over council staff are in the process of choosing another local charity to be the focus of fundraising efforts.
