Summerfields Miniature Railways Description
Summerfields Miniature Railways - open to the public some Sundays, Bank Holidays and some Wednesdays during school holidays (see our website for dates).
The Summerfields Railways have been built by the Bedford Model Engineering Society as a place for members to run their locos. It is actually three railways all linked together, Summerfields, Winterfield and Springfield. On certain days of the year we open our railway to the public so that you can come along and see what we do. For a small fare you can take a trip on our steam or diesel service around any of our three railways. We also have occasional rides behind traction engines. Its all great fun for kids and adults seem to love it too!
The railway is the public face of the hobby, and operates several times a year, in fine weather to the immense satisfaction of lots of children, (and say it not to a lot of dads and grandfathers who cant resist taking a ride).
We now have a purpose built log cabin style building which forms our clubroom for our evening meetings. This building also provides for our Station Buffet on public running days.
Please visit our website if you are interested in becoming a member.
You do not have to be a member to visit on one of our public open days.

A few scenes of another lovely, bright day at Summerfields Miniature Railways. Lots of people ventured out despite the chill and were also seen using our picnic tables.
Two engines steaming up, Gazelle and Standard 2, in preparation for today's public running day. We are open at 10.30 am today.
Spring colour has arrived at Summerfield Miniature railways. Come and enjoy a visit on Wednesday 10th April. Trains start running at 10.30 am. Also pictured here is the renovation of one of our level crossings.
Lots of visitors today at the railway, many of them celebrating Mothers’ Day. The wind meant that it was chilly at times but it remained dry and lots of bright sunshine enabled several groups of people to enjoy a picnic while others warmed up with hot drinks from the buffet. There were two steam locomotives on the main line and one on the winterfield raised track, along with several other battery or petrol powered engines. The garden rail line was also put to good use as seen by visitors using our recently enlarged picnic/viewing area.

The station is all ready to welcome visitors this weekend for our first running day this year - Sunday 31st March. New track is complete and ready for trains to run, picnic tables are all out in the sunshine and new fences surround the recently enlarged picnic/viewing area at Hammer Hill. Trains will start at 10.30 am and run until about 3.45 pm. The spring daffodils out at the moment remind us that the clocks go forward this weekend. Please remember cash as we are unable to take card payments.
Loch Treig, a 7 1/4 inch gauge steam locomotive, has recently been impressively overhauled by one of our members in preparation for the coming running season. Look out for Loch Treig when you visit. It is a model of a full scale steam locomotive, designed for the Great Northern Railway, which spent its running life in Scotland.
Our first 'Public Running' day of the 2019 season.
The first train departs Haynes End at 10:30, the last train departs around 15:45. For 2019 we have again decided to hold our ticket prices at the same level as last year (£2 return on the main line and £1 on the two other railway rides at Hammer Hill), although we do anticipate that some prices will have to rise slightly in 2020. Under 2's go free. Buy your tickets on the day - there is no need to pre-book.
... Our Station Buffet will be open as usual for drinks, cakes, biscuits, etc.
Please be aware that we are unable to take card payments, only cash.
We hope that you will come and enjoy a ride soon on Summerfields Miniature Railways.

Lots of steam at Summerfield this morning despite the miserable weather. Visitors at the railway are used to seeing steam engines at work. Some of our members’ steam engines don’t run on rails, however. Today, no less than 6 traction engines were in steam, undertaking their annual boiler test.
Snowy scenes at the railway.
The winter months have given some of our members the opportunity of creating a new structure at the railway. During the forthcoming running season our younger visitors may want to look out for the entrance to the Bedfordshire clanger mine.
Work continues on preparing for the 2019 public running season. Pictured here are two volunteers bending rail for a section of replacement track and two of the new signals are now in place on the turntable at Haynes End.

Another successful day today for our second Santa special. Lots of smiling faces despite the cold. A selection of photos from today including one of our drivers who is renowned for getting covered in coal smuts. Also a photo of two Christmas cards sent in by some kind visitors. It was lovely to know that they enjoyed themselves.
Way more fun than it should have been, and despite a long queue (with pre-schoolers) at peak time everyone was happy. The railway is run by enthusiasts and their enjoyment in showing off their railway is infectious. A great morning out :-)
