All ceramic materials are mined - some are rarer than others. Up to 80% of materials in a phone can be recycled, rare earth elements can be used in a ceramic glaze for beautiful colours and effects. Researchers at University of Plymouth have produced this infographic to show the level of mining required for elements in mobile phones.
Don't try putting your phone in a blender at home - consider sending it to a charity or recycling company. Maybe one day some of it will make... it's way into a ceramic glaze. See previous post for examples of rare earth elements in ceramic glazes.

It's that time of year again! The coffin kiln needed a new element fitting, the medium sized kiln needs a whole new refurbishment - should be back in the studio next week. It's probably the most frustrating (and expensive) time when kilns need fixing, but worth the wait when we're back to full firing capacity (though we don't fire the kilns at the same time). When one kiln has finished firing and is cooling down, the next one can be switched on. We're planning on holding some... reduction firings in our big gas kiln down at Bowyer Street in the next few months (for members only) - keep an eye out for announcements in the studio. Gas firings require a little more expertise (watching the kiln, adjusting the gas). We will have a dedicated porcelain kiln: iron contamination is a porcelain potters nightmare - hoping to test out some crystalline glazes too. #sundragonpottery #potterystudio #potterykiln https://ift.tt/2HA61lj

Where glaze dreams are made aka the glaze room, a little apothecary of powdered materials. Always wear a mask and always make a test amount first! As we fire to cone 8 at Sundragon, recipes need tweaking. We've slowly been moving to a different stoneware clay body (Oxidizing St Thomas) so some of the glazes are behaving a little different than usual. Here we're measuring out some test batches of a recipe that was in Ceramic Review, originally formulated for cone 6. If it's fi...red at cone 8 it's going to be runny, so the other two batches have added silica (to raise the melting temperature), the other has more materials which we're predicting will also look slightly different. There is a science to glazes that is fascinating and predictable. #potterystudio #pottery #ceramicglazes #ceramicstudio #sundragonpottery #chemistryisfun #glazechemistry https://ift.tt/2SVlRYR
