If you have mental health problems your GP will refer you to a counsellor or perhaps offer you medication. Difficult situations with or at work are less easy to resolve. Many organisations recognise the importance of coaching and it is well documented that it results in less absenteeism and more efficiency. Within my own profession Journalism there appears to be no quick fix to what many perceive as a dying art. And it is often freelancers who are suffering most. Having wor...ked as a broadcaster and journalist for close on 40 years and now lecturering on it, I leapt at the opportunity to train as a coach and mentor with the ILM. Today I have a busy coaching practice that writers can dip in and out of when they need to. It runs alongside my work running courses at The City Lit and City University and the travel writing module in the MA at Westminster University. Working from home can be isolating and depressing. One rejection can lead to a downward spiral of emotions. To reflect this I set up the Facebook support group JournoAnswers which has 3.3k members worldwide. Please click on the link and ask to join if you're a journalism graduate or already published. Our members range from retired editors to staffers, photographers and non fiction authors. Journalism is an evolving industry. The paymasters may be different but writers with good research skills and integrity will always be needed. So don't give up. Think laterally. If you hit a bad patch in your career, there is support out there.

Been on more training. Now got exciting new development tools to use in my #coaching and #mentoring practice. Please tell friends or colleagues, young or old, stuck, frustrated or disillusioned that there are definitely possibilities on the horizon. April sessions available before I go back to uni teaching. PS. I use skills from The Institute of Leadership & Management cert in Mentoring and Coaching, plus err, age-related wisdom. Currently working with university entrants, non-fiction authors and restless seniors.
