Sustainable Huddersfield

Sustainability has become a bit of a buzz word. It's hard to know what it actually means and whether we've achieving it. There is so much excellent work going on in Huddersfield towards making our town a better place, but it can be hard to join up the dots and see the bigger picture. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) help us on both counts. They take the vagueness out of sustainability. With 169 concrete targets, they provide us with a universally recognised checklist to measure our town's environmental, economic and social impact. They are wide-ranging and joined-up. The broad perspective of the goals shows us that protecting the environment can't be separated from tackling food poverty, that improving wellbeing goes hand in hand with stamping out discrimination. The goals provide a common language. There are many people and projects already working towards the goals in Huddersfield and we don't want to duplicate their efforts. What the goals offer is a common vocabulary about sustainability which allows us to build partnerships and work together more effectively. Each goal provides us with a set of measurable targets which makes what can seem like an overwhelming task much more manageable! It keeps us focused on results, rather than being a ‘talking shop'. They also give us tools to help us imagine what the future of our town can look like and are easy to communicate to others. Their overarching, interlinked framework reflects the broad nature of the challenges we are facing – helping us to come up with better solutions.
