Their story begins in 1976 when Mr Patel set up T. F. Cash & Carry in Leicester, renowned for its wide range of everyday and specialist products including handicrafts, books, art and decorative items. During the coming years, the Family continued to devote themselves to Indian products and set up spice importers FGS Mills (now known as FGS Ingredients), and Apsara, specialists in jewellery and health and beauty products. In 1984 they created their own record label, Sur Sagar, and built a recording studio in India.



Sur Sagar focussed specifically on the music of Gujarat in the Northwest and the new studio gave them opportunity to produce exclusive albums of the traditional folk and devotional music of the region. Part of that goal was to be in complete control of the production to ensure quality standards were met, to bring a superior product to the public and to help nurture the art itself. In 1996, they established a new record label Sense World Music - bringing together many great talents from the global music community including the great maestros of Indian classical music.



The team record artists each year at the famous Saptak music festival, the perfect setting for capturing fine musical spirits. They also record many artists at Indias premier recording studios, Virtual Studios near Anand. Sense has won numerous 5 star reviews Top of the World; status in Songlines magazine and other publications, BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, the new GMIA awards in India at the close of 2010 and plaudits from the world over for their dedication to delivering the highest quality musical and production standards. The Sense team are also well known for the bringing the Village India festival to De Montfort Hall in 2009 which attracted 15, 000 people to the event. The festival was praised by the BBC as the best festival of its type and the best they had filmed all year!
