About Tall Ships Youth Trust

Formed in 1956, the Trust is one of the world’s oldest sail training charities dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 12 to 25.

Tall Ships Youth Trust Description

Each year, over 3, 000 sail with the Trust with 70% of the young people disadvantaged or disabled.
For most young people, a Trust voyage is a turning point. Living, working and eating together is both challenging, physically and mentally. Young people don’t just learn about life at sea. They learn about life itself.

From the minute they step on board, young people work in watches, taking responsibility for themselves and others. Tasks include setting and stowing sails, helming, rope work, anchoring, navigation, meteorology, cleaning and maintaining, food preparation and galley work.

We took a group of young people from Wirral Youth Zone down to Portsmouth to experience a week sailing around the South Coast. The experience was fantastic. The staff and volunteers went above and beyond with our young people to provide the most amazing life experience for them. To Nick, Sam, Monkey, Beth and Steve thank you! Wholeheartedly recommend to all!

We have recently moved to Brixham and were excited to see the ship in the harbour but even more excited to go on it. As your first visitors this morning we were very kindly taken round the ship by Chas who was very informative and friendly. All of the youngsters we chatted to were so thrilled to have been sailing on the ship in the last week or so. Thank you so much Nigel and Joanna.

This is an experience of a lifetime and i would recommend anyone to take part in a voyage. You will be looked after and taught by a fantastic permanent crew and a volunteer crew.

You can push yourself as much or as little as you like.

I would like to Thank everyone that did voyage SSN 800 for a rewarding and friendly voyage.

Sailing is a spiritual experience!!

Myself and my nephew had a fantastic time with the crew Saturday. Despite only being 13 my nephew was invited (and encouraged) to do everything. The crew, both permanent and voluntary, were fantastic and the ship amazing. The next adventure is already in the planning.

Last week I had a superb week on the Tenacity of Bolton, Cruising the Islands and Lochs of the Clyde Estuary. The winds were a bit less than expected, but we did sail whenever we could and the weather in general was warm, bright and sunny and no rain for the week. A visit to Lochranza Distillery gave us a taste of local products. With two well experienced skippers, Mike and Andrew and Volunteer Crew Member, Helen, it was good company and great week. Many thanks to the Trust for running this voyage.

User

Just came off my 3rd Voyage with tall ships bringing the Tenacity of Bolton back from Scotland it was amazing the crew were amazing and the skipper was brilliant but then I had him when I took the boat up to Scotland. The skipper and mate were very encouraging and they taught us some helpful tips if we were ever going to get our own boat. I would also like to do a massive shout out to our skipper Paul wise for encouraging me to do my Navy application when I got home.

I've done 2 voyages with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, both times on Stavros S Niarchos. It really is the experience of a lifetime and I'd recommend that everyone gives it a go! It's hard work on board but well worth it. The views and experiences you'll have will be unforgettable, and you'll see sunsets and stars like you've never seen them before!

User

I look forward every year to my 4 nights and 5 days sailing

I love how I see the young people we take change

For some they are terrified of what is going to happen but every year we bring back pupils that can't stop talking about their experience and how they can't wait to go again

Hi, I have done two crossings to France on a yacht, I have gone around the Isle of Wight in a yacht. I have done numerous day cruises on Solent water and Poole harbour.

All of these were topped by a Voyage on a tall ship.

I with the rest of the crew and officers spent 6 days travelling from Greenock to Luce Bay to Port St Mary Isle of Man to Liverpool. It was brilliant, I learnt about the rigging, went up and over, setting the sails, bracing the yards and sails, stowing the mooring lines in their locker. As a galley slave , we laid tables and served all. We carried out 4 hour watches during the day and night. I helmed the ship, learnt about navigation, tides and wind. Took sea temperatures for metrological records. Everyone on board were strangers on day 1, by day 2 we were a team, a great team with guidance from the volunteer crew, thanks all, and of course the officers. It is an excellent experience were you can meet like minded people, share experiences and bond.

Thanks to you all

Have sailed on Stavros a while ago, wonderful experience, would love to race round IOW someday.

User

Great Skippers and mates, amazing boats, fab office backup and an awesome mission to change lives. You have changed mine!

User

Did three cruises on both Brigs pw369 SSN280 and the brigs race in the Solent 2008. I was in my late sixties then and although it was long hours and fairly hard work I got through it. Sadly now I am in my late seventies and the old body would not be up to it but I would do it again in a shot if I could.
