Tavistock Golf Club Description

The club was founded in 1890 by a small group of 12 enthusiasts who asked the local landowner, the duke of bedford, for permission to set out a "link" of nine ho;es on whitchurch down which lies on the edge of dartmoor. this was granted for the rent of 1 /- per annum! thus began the long association with the bedford family name, the 15th Duke being the club's present patron.

The course
Over the following decades the course gradually began to develop into the magnificent moorland course that it is to-day. wide and inviting fairways hide the challenging nature of the course. The thin soil makes for tight lies, while gorse, braken, clumps of scrubby trees and cunning hidden bunkers can trap the most proficient golfer. The course is renowned for the speed of its greens and the thin soil allows for the course and greens to drain very quickly. These conditions make for a year long play with no temporary greens!

The club house
After your game you can relax in the comfortable surrounding of the club house. Built and paid for by the Duke of bedford in 1915 and modernised over the years, it is the third clubhouse on this site. The first clubhouse was known as the iron house and was replaced by a wooden building in 1905. The present building was built and paid for by the Duke of bedford in 1915. modernised and altered over the years it stills retains some of its original features!
