Save our sexual health services!
New figures show 85% of councils in England are planning to cut their public health budgets with sexual health being one of the very hardest hit areas.
Central government cuts to local authority public health budgets are having a devastating impact.
... Sexual health services in England are already unable to meet current levels of demand. This is the time to invest – not cut.
'Data from sexual health clinics shows that even people with symptomatic sexually transmitted infections are now being turned away as clinics are unable to cope,' says our Head of Policy Debbie Laycock.
'Demand for sexual health services in England has risen by 13% since 2013 but rather than invest in services, the government has continually cut funding for public health.
‘Sexual health services in England are already unable to meet current levels of demand, which is why it’s deeply concerning that this is once again one of the areas to be hardest hit by proposed cuts.
‘With more people than ever before accessing sexual health services, now is the time to invest in public health rather than continuing to cut and cut. Otherwise, we’ll never bring down the unacceptably high numbers of new sexually transmitted infections in this country.
‘We welcome this commitment from The Labour Party to prioritise public health. But now Labour, and all political parties, must accelerate their actions. Time is running out. The NHS 10 Year Plan is currently being drafted and the government’s Autumn Budget is likely fewer than six weeks away.
‘We believe public health – including sexual health – must be at the heart of the NHS 10 year plan. We’re strongly urging central government to increase public health spending within the upcoming Autumn Budget as well as commiting resource from the NHS five year funding settlement to public health. We are running out of time to prevent a sexual health crisis in England.’

BREAKING NEWS 📣
The High Court has rejected a patent extension for Truvada by Gilead. This paves the way for the use of much cheaper generic #PrEP on the NHS. 👍
Debbie Laycock, Head of Policy and Parliamentary Affairs, Terrence Higgins Trust said: ‘This is a landmark ruling that should pave the way for the use of generic PrEP on the NHS in England and Wales.’
... ‘Even though branded Truvada is still cost effective when compared to lifelong HIV treatment and care, the use of generics would slash the costs of purchasing the drug. There is now an even stronger economic argument for PrEP being made routinely available on the NHS in England
‘This ruling also would reduce the cost of PrEP in Wales, where there is currently an uncapped pilot that is using branded Truvada – this further strengthens the case to ensure a long-term agreement for PrEP on the NHS in Wales.
‘A number of trial sites across England are turning gay and bisexual men away from accessing PrEP due to a surge in demand – this is not acceptable. NHS England must now expedite its discussions with local authorities and agree a funding solution so PrEP can have a long-term and sustainable home on the NHS.’

Although new diagnoses of Black African heterosexual men and women have continued to decline, black heterosexual men still face the highest rate of late diagnosis.
'The fact that black African people are some of the most likely to be diagnosed late is worrying and unacceptable. Early diagnosis means people can access life saving treatment as early as possible before the virus has done damage to their immune system.
'Public Health England has noted that those diagnosed late w...ould have lived with HIV without knowing for between three to five years therefore increasing the risk of passing on the virus unknowingly,' says our Head of Social Marketing Takudzwa Mukiwa

The THT does so much to help those who live with HIV to live full, happy, healthy lives. As wells providing support, education, and awareness. The government had recently cut funding to sexual services in Britain GUM Clinc's are being hurt too. Now more than ever we need SRE in schools. THT is a worthwhile charity to support.

Thanks for my red ribbon will wear it with pride 1st December

Drew smith please do not judge an amazing organisation that has saved and supported so many lives by a personal grievance with an individual. Without THT so many hundreds of people would not have the support they needed benefits housing counselling emotional wellbeing and had to face stigma alone. THT have done so much for so many. Dont let an individual smear your judgment please

Why is this page on Hep B page so unhelpful and I think in light of the recent contaminated blood tragedy thats been on UK Media its time for THT to accept the vast majority of infections are NOT gay sex and drug use.

Also how do you think a patient or their partner is going to feel reading

"It's passed on through:

oral, vaginal or anal sex without a condom

rimming

sharing sex toys

sharing injecting drug equipment such as needles and syringes which can carry infected blood

a pregnant woman with the virus can give it to her baby during childbirth."

Ever wondered how many marriages you might have broke up ?

Don't you stop and think "Oh I wonder why the UK government are doing the birth dose of the vaccine?"

I mistery called your helpline and said I was a chronically infected patient who's girlfriend had left him due to the quoated information above wrote at the top of your page.

All your advisor could tell me was its passed on through sex and drug use.

No mention of birth transmission. Nothing on contaminated blood transfusions.

He gave me the number of the British Liver foundation. Why not the Hep B foundation UK?

Why couldn't he answer my questions?

I asked about being sexually infectious he said "yes" NO FURTHER comment.

I had to prompt him about vaccines your advisor didn't seem to be very well informed and refused to give his name.

HONESTLY CLUE YOURSELVES UP I will be mistery shopping you more and more until I'm satisfied that your advisor display a knowldgeable approach combined with emotional intelligence. I care about the Hep B community & I won't settle until you give value for the money your given.

THT you have been given millions of national lottery funding to help Hep B patients and in my opinion as a patient and an advocate your a shambles. Your advisor should be VERY knowledgeable in the area of Hep B considering all the money your given for it...

One tip under the part about sex etc Write the facts on vaccines i.e Once anti bodies show the person is immune.

People with Hep B if you want help

Join either of these groups

Hepatitis A,B,C

as the THT are about as much help as a chocolate fire guard to Hep B people

Surprised that this charity treats potential staff so poorly without reason - you cannot tell someone they have a job with you for three weeks then casually ring them up and tell them they haven't with no explanation and their references all good. Very poor treatment and totally contradicts the values this charity perceives to live by - more training needed re recruitment process.
