About The Argyll Arms

The Argyll Arms is one of many rare gems in the Nicholson's collection of great British pubs, reputed for their distinctive buildings.

The Argyll Arms Description

This eighteenth century pub had a 'makeover' in 1895. The result is one of the most magnificently decorated pub interiors in England. What makes it so special is that it has survived at all, when so many of its contemporaries were either destroyed by wartime bombing, or brewery blunder.

Most rare are the small cubicles that line the front bar. Lavish etched and cut glass screens in crafted hardwood frames, form cosy, discreet boxes. Their purpose was to separate the different social classes and were commonplace in the late 19th century.

At every turn are decorative mirrors and richly carved mahogany joinery, under a heavily embossed ceiling, over-the-top by today’s standards, but the height of sophistication in its day. Fashions may change but the quality and craftsmanship are breathtaking. This makeover would have cost a small fortune.

Pubs like this were designed to attract the discerning drinker. There was plenty of competition, Oxford Street alone had more than 20 pubs. So it is surprising how ordinary its exterior, easily missed if rushing to Oxford Street tube next door. If you are not in a hurry, take time to explore the Argyll's ample assets.

The pub and street take their name from the Duke of Argyll who had a mansion where the London Palladium now stands. Its location just off Oxford Circus mean it's busy most of the day, later morning or mid afternoon are quietest. There's a good selection of real ales and reasonably priced food.

What a fab old traditional London pub. The decor was wonderful and the beer and staff too!!

Wanted somewhere to eat pre show at The Palladium. Grabbed a drink and went upstairs to the dining room. What a treat! I had fish and chips, thick and well cooked fish and covered in crisp batter and the chips were marvellous! My husband had the pie which he thoroughly enjoyed-both dishes washed down with a glass of Merlot for me and a pint of Pilsner Urquell for the husband. The staff upstairs, although incredibly busy, could not have been more attentive and polite. Will definitely revisit.

Quality pint, quality food, decent atmosphere. Fantastic.

I'm in love with this little place and it is a treasure. Apart from yesterday. For years I have been dining in this pub and I've sat at the same table every time (upstairs at the window table in the right hand corner). After being told they wouldn't be busy around 12 me & my mum decided to early lunch as we were walking down to the Shaftesbury later on. We sat down and the waiter who I can only describe as rude and arrogant piped up. He told us we had to move. I was mortified. There was only us and two other couples when we arrived and the table we had sat in was free through our entire meal. His response when we told him we had asked earlier was 'I don't care, I'm in charge upstairs and they don't work here'.

You might be wondering why I have still given The Argyle Arms a 5 star review. The food is amazing, the other members of staff are lovely and the atmosphere is delightful.

A real gem in Oxford street.

I love this pub. Every booth, decorated mirror and worktop is a part of our rich pub heritage and like all great historic pubs it feels like a port in a storm. A beautifully honey, green and brown coloured refuge from the fast, plastic, noisy world outside. Tidy selection of ales and not silly expensive for the smoke.

Had booked a two night stay this weekend for my husbands 60th, we were going to the London Palladium on Saturday which was his birthday and as we have eaten at the Argyll Arms before decided to pre book a table as it does get busy. We were shown to our table( by the window) as asked when I booked it. I had mentioned when booking it was for my hubbys birthday, and we were brought out two glasses of fizz, a lovely surprise. Hubby had the pie & mash, i had the smoked salmon fish cakes, both were lovely, too full for dessert unfortunately. It's certainly worth a visit as has lots of character. 👍😀

Great proper pub. Good food too. Music was on point as well. Lots of nooks to find your perfect spot.

Went in after a show at the Palladium and they managed to fit us. Food, service and staff very good.

User

We popped in here for a drink before going to the London Palladium. Nice pub with lots of little cubby holes. There is a restaurant upstairs but we didn't use this so can't comment on the food. The drinks menu was quite extensive and the staff were friendly and helpful and seemed able to cope with the number of clientele. The prices were average for the West End. On entering the premises there was a slight odour of lavatories but this either wore off or we became acclimatised. Would recommend.

User

Traditional pub, good selection of drinks, but filthy mirrors, and they are large and many!

User

Lovely pub, lots of small areas to drink. Plenty of carved wood and etched glass. Real ale choices not extensive, but what they have is worth a visit.

User

I love character of the place good old London pub good beer too

User

Good food and good beer. Lovely old London pub.

Having been here for a drink before and had an enjoyable evening, I didn't hesitate to suggest it as a meeting point for a quick bite to eat with some friends. Our chosen wine was not available however the suggested replacement was very good. Whilst the food was nice, the service left a little to be desired. It was very difficult to get the waiter's attention, particularly when needing to ask for the bill. The two waiters seemed more intent on tidying behind the bar, rather than scanning the room to check customers were happy. We left at 9.40pm, just as they were turning away a small group of people who were looking to eat. So make sure you book a table and don't plan on being served late and without a booking!

User

Food good and pretty reasonably priced. Served nice fast.

Useful if bar staff were trained how to serve Guinness correctly, not dispense a white mass that we had to wait ages to settle 😊

User

Slow service, poor bar staff! The girl served three people who arrived at the bar after us, first.

Great for the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿Game but the food poor and very expensive
