Warm welcome when you arrive. We had a tour by a really nice young man who even let me borrow his sunglasses while having lunch in the beautiful garden.



I used the gym and felt like I had my own PT as got lots of tips on how to get the best out of my workout.



The Spa area was super relaxing.



Had an eye treatment which was pure bliss.



Food was lovely too.



Want to go back!

Today was a special birthday gift from dear friends. My thanks to the therapist who gave me two very deep treatments, firstly a full body massage followed by a full facial. She did an amazing job on my stressed, tense and somewhat mature body. I’d recommend this spa to everyone.

Just had spa day. Worth every penny. Started with light breakfast then water aerobics, swim, sauna, jacuzzi. Afternoon tea consisted of 2 scones jam cream tea and glass of prosecco so we ordered sandwiches to have first which were delicious. Treatment was excellent. Would recommend but take your own shampoo and conditioner as not provided. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Having just enjoyed a day at this spa, I could not recommend it enough! Staff were amazing, so polite & helpful. Lunch was lovely & so reasonable (afternoon tea, also lovely). The building is truly beautiful & all facilities were clean & well kept. Enjoyed an hour long massage that was wonderful, honestly could not find fault with any of it and will certainly be coming back.

Fantastic hidden gem! A group of 9 of us visited for the day on Saturday as part of a hen do. Everything was perfect from start to finish. The quality of service, facilities & treatments was fantastic- thank you for a memorable day.

Fabulous “Spa Sublime Day” booked by my sister to celebrate my recent birthday. We went to the Club on Tuesday and spent a wonderful day there. A very relaxing day including a Full Body Massage and Marine Discovery Facial- the best treatments I have ever experienced. I also managed to attend a good old fashioned Aerobic Class instructed by Michaela (I think that was her name) and have a quick swim. I can’t wait to book again.

Really relaxing day and the staff and chef made every effort to provide me with vegan options. Homemade scones, vegan spread and soya milk made for a very enjoyable cream tea. The facilities are lovely but I’ve been a few times now and the pool is looking a bit tatty. The floor is crumbling and the ceiling is riddled with damp that hasn’t been addressed for years. Certainly needs dealing with and a fresh lick of paint.

My Mum and I had a Spa Day yesterday.

The treatments, food, setting and staff were wonderful. The only downfall was a lot of paint work looking quite tired, it is very noticeable in the pool area. I was told by a member of staff they are undergoing redecorating this year. It didn't spoil our day at all though �

Highly recommend and I will return.

Had a lovely relaxing spa day with my daughter today. This was our first visit here. We actually drove past the building at first as there are no clear signs up. We were given a tour of the facilities and were given our robes, slippers and towels to use for the day. The weather was lovely and we sat outside to have our tea and croissants in the sunshine. (Such a shame that a nearby business decided to have a bonfire!) The lady from the bistro was very helpful. We enjoyed using the pool and jacuzzi then went for our treatments, a massage and a facial and these were very good. After this we sat outside again for our cream tea. We were surprised that it was not very busy in there, although that was rather nice for us today. Perhaps it needs more advertising. I agree that parts of the building need some decorating. However it is a lovely building and is clean and tidy. The staff were polite and attentive. We would definitely like to go back, especially as it is fairly local for us.

Had a lovely relaxing day yesterday at the Athenaeum Spa with my daughter and her mother in law. We were there for a Mother's Day treat and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had the spa facilities plus a treatment and croissants for breakfast also tea and scones in the afternoon in the library. We had a delicious lunch outside in the sunshine plus a cocktail or two�. Have been before but noticed a few signs of ageing around the pool area this time. Hopefully this will be addressed in the future as I know I will be returning.

Had a lovely day here! Staff couldn't do enough for you, attentive but not intrusive! Really lovely building, understand they are working on the issues caused by snow, once it's had a little TLC in the pool area it'll be 5* Food was amazing, great spa day for the price we paid! Will be returning for sure!

Booked the Mothers day package was good value. I had visited before about 7 years ago, but pool area is looking bit run down mould on ceilings but someone explained it was due to the snow we'd had and was being sorted. A lovely venue though and helpful staff. The treatment was one of the best I've had.

Booked 2x dip your toe in package, what a lovely and relaxing day, staff were very accommodating and friendly, food was delicious and the red wine was strong! Very peaceful and wasn’t busy! Only thing that stopped it from getting 5 star is some areas of the building needs abit of renovation, especially around the pool area, a cherry picker and a tin of white paint can’t fix though :) other than that - lovely! Would go again.

Been to a few spa's in Essex now and this is the best. Wasn't too busy, lovely full body massage, nice food, brilliant service all day long and really nice facilities & surroundings. Everything was clean and well kept. Saw the issues others have mentioned re ceiling in pool area above jacuzzi but it didnt affect our day in anyway so I dont see what the issue is. A nice relaxing day.

-Booked a spa day with my mum who is over from Canada as a late Mothers day treat ( did nt book treatments as she has a bad neck and back ) so breakfast , spa access and afternoon tea package -

-Lovely friendly helpful staff can not fault the service - gorgeous decor in the libary and afternoon tea was fab.

-Massive pool ,waterfall-shower , jacuzzi and steam room etc

- Was a shame that works were going on for roof repairs in the pool area and the mouldy patches above the jacuzzi ( but i could see that these areas were being worked on ) ( and the workmen were quiet )

All other areas were spotless and tidy

Will be returning

my husband and I had the winter warmer day, although the customer service was excellent the decor in the main swimming pool area was tired and there was lots of black mould on the ceiling above the jaccuzi, and you could see where there has been leak and patch of wood covering the area that was damage made it look worse...it could do with a paint as parts were peeling off....also the individual jaccuzi and dry sauna were not working....

Been hear a few times now. Staff are lovely and the treatments are faultless. However the spa it self needs a SERIOUS revamp and building work done! The whole place has a really strong smell of mould which is visible around the pool area. The tiles on the floor around and in the pool are crumpling away which makes it very slippery and uncomfortable. The ceiling above the pool area, the paint is coming off and falling into the pool/ jacuzzi. It all looks really unloved � such a shame.

Had a great day with friends however didn’t find some of the staff overly friendly & it needs some serious decorating! The tiles round the pool were crumbling, there was mould around & above the spa pool & there was a hole in the towel on the lounger.

I paid £75 for a full body massage (back, legs, chest & fronts arms) skimmed over hands and feet

The hour treatment lasted 45 minutes and the “Therapist” I use the term loosely was doing things such as applying pressure coming down the back, to the backs of my knees (causing one of my knee caps to pop) then massaging over the fronts of my knee caps and only brushed her hand over my feet and hands.

I myself am a fully qualified massage therapist and there was no real routine going on and the absolute basics such as avoiding knees and not applying heavy pressure on the way down the body were being done.

I contacted the spa and was told that the girl had talked through a massage and they are satisfied she done it correctly ?? I’m not convinced she was even qualified in massage (as we were told on the way in the regular therapist had been in an accident and was in hospital)

Also the pool area of the spa was disgusting with mould all around the pool and pillars. Paint peeling off of the ceiling, the floor tiles crumbling so as you walk to the pool it’s like walking on sand / mud, all of the glazing in the windows had blown. Such a shame as this place with a good clean and revamp of pool area and better qualified therapist could be amazing.

Food & waiters at lunch were fantastic though.
