So once again our wonderful dental therapist PAT will be returning to Uganda in 2018 volunteering for charity. This will be his 5th trip helping for this wonderful cause!
During his two-week trip to Uganda, he and a team will treat hundreds of adults and children who have no access or funds for dental care. Their trip includes running clinics in the slums of Uganda and working in remote rural locations running oral health education projects and treating people in pain.
We wou...ld very much appreciate you helping Pat to reach his target of £2200.00 to be able to go. What ever you can donate will be appreciated no mater how little ... as It all adds up!!

On the 12th of May for the first time ever is National Gum Health Awareness Day.
We aim to raise awareness of gum health and encourage people to visit there dentist to check for gum disease.
Gum disease affects more than 45% of adults in the UK and has known links to other serious conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
... As we are a practice that treats gum disease and local dentist refer to us we aim to promote National Gum Health Day and to, raise awareness of the signs of gum disease and to highlight that this disease can be prevented and usually successfully treated.
You can get involved too….
Visit the BSP how’s your smile website to download a mouthcard, take a mouthie and post it to twitter. Use the hastag #howsyoursmile to be entered into the BSP prize draw to win some great prizes!

Two of our wonderful nurses Katie and Feli were joined by Rachel one of our hygienist's for a skydive on the 12th June 2015 raising funds for The Robin Cancer Trust. This is a local charity raising awareness for germ cell cancer in 16-35 year olds.
The Avenue Dental Practice is supporting efforts to raise funds and so far has collected £220 from kind patients. All donations welcome until the end of the month!

We at the Avenue have decided to learn a little bit about what it is like to live with dementia and so we have signed up to become dementia friends, we are the first practice in Essex to be trained by Alzhemier's Society to become dementia friends. You can get more information on www.dementiafriends.org.uk. This is not about fundraising or donating but about understanding a bit more about dementia and the small things we can do to help people with the condition.
For further information on services from Alzheimer's Society contact Colchester & District office on 01206 573708

Stoptober Month- quit smoking this month & here is just one reason why!
Smoking Can Lead to Gum Disease!
Smoking and other tobacco products can lead to gum disease by affecting the attachment of bone and soft tissue to your teeth. More specifically, it appears that smoking interferes with the normal function of gum tissue cells. This interference makes smokers more susceptible to infections, such as periodontal disease, and also seems to impair blood flow to the gums - which... may affect wound healing.
did you know smoking also leads to dental problems, including:
Bad breath Tooth discoloration Inflammation of the salivary gland openings on the roof of the mouth Increased build up of plaque and tartar on the teeth Increased loss of bone within the jaw Increased risk of leukoplakia, white patches inside the mouth Increased risk of developing gum disease, a leading cause of tooth loss Delayed healing process following tooth extraction, periodontal treatment, or oral surgery Lower success rate of dental implant procedures Increased risk of developing oral cancer
your smile is more important than you may think, just look at photo of yourself and now imagine a smile with a tooth or teeth missing...yuk!, Your teeth, and oral health is more important than you think, so join Stoptober this month and start looking after your oral health today.
Stop smoking for FREE take the challenge up sign up at your local pharmacy for a FREE 10 week course of nicotine replacement therapy. (until 31st October) or click this link go on give up today!! https://stoptober.smokefree.nhs.uk/regist ration-c
Because life's better smoke-free!

Its still National Smile month May 19th –June 19th so here are some fun facts
Did you know:
The going rate per tooth from the tooth fairy is £1 being the highest and £5 being the lowest! (Sounds like you’re better off keeping up the brushing than trading them in or losing them through poor oral hygiene!).
... 61% of us have been attracted to someone by their smile alone! (time to look after them pearly whites hey!).
Top thing we could not do without when we go on holiday is….our toothbrush!
We would share our tooth brush with Our partner 24% Our child 18% A friend 7% A celebrity 6% (YUK!)

As you may be aware from the local press and radio residents and local businesses are protesting about the proposed changes in parking regulations in the Lexden area. Colchester Borough Council are proposing to change to residents only parking in The Avenue. We feel this would have a detrimental affect on our patients, some of whom are elderly and infirm and would suffer real hardship having to park at the nearest car park 3/4's of a mile away.
