Joe Northwood Plays Coltrane £9.00
Saxophonist Joe Northwood is becoming one of the Cardiff jazz scene’s major voices, and besides playing also promotes gigs and jam sessions at Tiny Rebel. Having graduated from the Royal Welsh College Joe furthered his studies by attending some of the USA led summer schools in Italy, where he received tuition from some of the world’s greatest such as Walter Smith iii, Ben Wendel and David Binney. The full title of his new project is Impress...ions: A Coltrane Celebration, and is a fitting tribute to the incredible legacy of John Coltrane, one of the finest musical minds to ever pick up a saxophone. The programme will include many famous Coltrane compositions and other pieces he recorded. Denny Ilett Quartet £9.00
Guitarist Denny Ilett is of course well-known as organiser of Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival, and is one of the few musicians around able to play convincingly in almost any style. He can be found performing in groups ranging from Gypsy Jazz through to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin tributes, and along the way has worked extensively with New Orleans vocalist Lillian Boutté and king of funk Pee Wee Ellis. A CD of Denny’s stunning big band arrangements of Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland is currently in production. For tonight he will be returning to straight ahead modern jazz in the esteemed company of Dan Moore - piano, Riaan Vosloo - bass and Mark Whitlam - drums.

Simon Spillett Quartet £9.00
Back in February we had to cancel Simon’s visit due to snow, so we’re very pleased to have been able to find a replacement date for him. Simon Spillett is a virtuosic hard-bop tenor sax player who has won the BBC Jazz Awards Rising Star (2007), Jazz Journal's Critics' Choice album of the Year (2009), the British Jazz Awards Top Tenor Saxophonist (2011), and the Services to British Jazz award (2016). Besides being a blistering player he is also a ...reviewer and biographer, and is an authority on the life and work of Tubby Hayes, one of the UK's most important jazz figures. Besides having written the biography Tubby Hayes - The Long Shadow Of The Little Giant and appearing in the film documentary Tubby Hayes: A Man In A Hurry, Simon keeps the Hayes legacy alive by performing much of Tubby's repertoire. He is joined by Jim Blomfield - piano, Riaan Vosloo - bass and Andy Hague - drums, who will be bracing themselves for some challenging tempos.

Andy Hague Quintet £9.00
Trumpeter Andy Hague’s quintet launch their May tour to promote recent CD release Coming Of Age. The CD has picked up some great reviews - “it's the variety of the musical structures deployed, as well as the sheer spirit and fire in these performances that makes this a significant milestone for Hague and his chums” – Peter Vacher, four star review in Jazzwise March 2019. “So impressed with this record, wow, it’s current, it’s hip” – Linley Hamilton, BBC Radio Ulster’s Jazz World. “performed with great class and style, excellently recorded and showing him and his band to be masters of their craft.” – Mark McKergow, London Jazz News. Come and see what all the fuss is about. Andy Hague - trumpet, Ben Waghorn - tenor sax, Jim Blomfield - piano, Chris Jones - bass and Toby Perrett - drums.

SOLD OUT!
Henry Lowther's Still Waters £12.00
We are taking reservations with payment by bank transfer for this event, please contact mail@thebebopclub.co.uk
... Henry Lowther - trumpet, Pete Hurt - sax, Barry Green - piano, Dave Green - bass, Paul Clarvis - drums.
We are honoured to be presenting trumpeter Henry Lowther as part of his 75th birthday tour. Henry is a legend of British jazz who has performed in the big bands of John Dankworth, Mike Westbrook, Mike Gibbs, Stan Tracey and Kenny Wheeler. He is one of only two or three players in the world to have played lead trumpet with both Gil Evans and George Russell. As a session musician he has recorded with Elton John, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Van Morrison, and played at the infamous Woodstock Festival back in 1969 with Keef Hartley.
Henry formed the band Still Waters with his friend of many years bassist Dave Green, another major figure in UK jazz who has worked with Stan Tracey, Humphrey Lyttelton, Charlie Watts and many more. On sax is Pete Hurt, who has played with Carla Bley and George Russell, and was also part of Andy Sheppard's Soft On The Inside big band. Pianist Barry Green is a professor at the Guildhall School and was last heard in Bristol with Brigitte Beraha at St George's. Drummer/percussionist Paul Clarvis must be one of the UK's most recorded musicians, having played on numerous major film scores and tv productions.
An incredible line-up for us to have at our small club.

Damon Brown Quartet £9.00
Damon Brown is one of the UK’s top jazz trumpeters. He is possibly best known at home for his work with saxophonist Ed Jones and their band Killer Shrimp, which won the 2007 Best Live Group in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. However, Damon has also spent time living in Barcelona and Paris and recorded with many international jazz stars, most notably former Miles Davis saxophonist Steve Grossman with whom he recorded the CD This Time The Dream’s On Me... [2008]. Damon has also worked a lot in Japan with pianist Yutaka Shiina [Roy Hargrove - Tokyo Sessions], and following on from this has for the past few years based himself in South Korea playing and recording with the country’s leading jazz musicians as well as many visiting USA players. He’s just back for a short UK tour so don’t miss. Supporting Damon we have the sensitive piano accompaniment of Andy Nowak, virtuosic bass from Ashley John Long and the grooving drumming of Andy Tween.

Julien Alenda Quartet £9.00
French saxophonist Julien Alenda has had a real impact on Bristol’s jazz scene over the past few years, appearing in numerous bands and hosting the popular jam sessions at the Fringe bar. Now mainly playing tenor sax rather than alto, Julien is one of the most naturally gifted improvisers in the city with a phenomenal ear, and has no problem negotiating standards in those unusual vocal keys. The influx of new players to Bristol continues with piani...st Tim Funnell playing at the club for the first time. Born in London, Tim has studied jazz both in the Netherlands and Paris, receiving tuition from top USA and European teachers. On bass is Aeddan Llywelyn, one of Cardiff’s busiest players, and another new face to the Be-Bop, Bristol based drummer James Vine, who plays with Waldo’s Gift and the Feelgood Experiment.

Sound of BlueNote £9.00
A welcome return visit to the club for this popular band, who do exactly what it says on the tin. Many of the tunes have been transcribed from famous Blue Note albums and are not to be found in the Real Books, so the group has really found it’s own voice and repertoire by digging deep in to the vaults. Fronted by the powerhouse trumpet of Andy Urquhart and fantastic Canadian tenor saxophonist Terry Quinney, with Phil Doyle - piano, Ben Taylor - bass & Andy Hague - drums. Constantly gigging across the south of the UK including regular appearances at Boisdale Canary Wharf in London, the band also perform as a sextet with special guests who have included Mark Nightingale, Alan Barnes, Dave O’Higgins, Gilad Atzmon & Jim Mullen

Tom Berge Quartet feat. Matt Hopkins £9.00
This gig has been previously advertised as featuring Martin Genge on sax - unfortunately Martin has had to pull out due to a family bereavement. We wish Martin all the best and hope to be able to invite him back soon. Meanwhile we are grateful to guitarist Matt Hopkins for stepping in as a replacement.
Tom Berge is a fine pianist, originally from Bath he studied at Leeds College of Music and has now settled in Cardiff where he is ma...king a great contribution to the city’s jazz scene. On guitar we have Matt Hopkins, who has played with Andy Sheppard's Hotel Bristol, the Hopkins-Hammond Trio and the club's tribute to electric-era Miles before Christmas. Bassist Clive Morton moved up to Gloucestershire quite a few years ago, but before that was an absolute mainstay of the Bristol jazz scene as well as having a national reputation through his work with players such as pianist David Newton. On drums we have award winning young drummer Billy Weir again, who is deservedly becoming a regular performer at the Be-Bop.
