Off Sale...update 29 September From ‘Three Tuns Brewery’, Bishops Castle, Shropshire 4.3%abv.. A renowned beer from a recipe passed down by the Roberts family; a pale-straw-coloured, premium bitter with simple, light malty sweetness, delicate with light bitterness of floral, earthy character.
The small market town of Bishop’s Castle, on the Shropshire/Welsh border, is home to the Three Tuns Brewery, a brewery with significant claims to fame....... A brewing licence at the site was first granted in 1642. Part of the existing brewery is of 17th Century origin and this would be consistent with it having been the original brewhouse, which would make it the oldest working brewery premises in Britain. The remainder of the present brewery consists of a tower erected in about 1888. Tower breweries were a product of Victorian ingenuity; the movement of liquids through the brewing vessels could easily be achieved if the main ingredients, malt and water, were winched and pumped to the top of a tower so that gravity could achieve all the transfers needed during the brewing process. Although some of the modern technology departs from the original gravity concept, the tower at the Three Tuns Brewery is a classic, miniature Victorian tower which, together with the older building, is described in its Grade Two listing as “a rare survival of a small, working rural brewery”. The Three Tuns is renowned to cask beer lovers world-wide; many confess to visiting the town purely to see the brewery and sample the beer.
At the advent of the ‘Campaign for Real Ale’ in the 1970s, the Three Tuns Brewery, with the adjacent Three Tuns Inn, was one of only four home-brew pubs operating in the whole of Britain. Its survival can be attributed to the custodianship of the John Roberts family, who bought the pub and brewery sometime in the 1880s, and who built the tower. His son, Erskine Roberts, and his grandson, John Roberts, continued brewing into the mid-1970s.
For several years the future of the Three Tuns brewery had appeared uncertain, following periods of closure. The investment required to bring it up to modern standards had made its viability questionable. In July 2002 a plan was published to convert it to housing.
In January 2003 the brewery was bought by the John Roberts’ Brewing Co.Ltd., the name of which celebrates the brewery’s historic association, over about a century, with the Roberts family. The brewery has been fully re-furbished, which should ensure its brewing future for many years to come.

User

Lovely food and great service, visited 3 times over the last year and each time has been worth the hour drive round trip!

User

I came here to sit outside in the beer garden for food and drinks on a very hot day. There was plenty of seating, I ate a Mexican chicken wrap which was a very generous chicken filling and tasty, the chips are really thick and tasty although they call them fries on the menu, and the garlic bread is gorgeous, proper garlicky and dripping. The staff were very friendly too

User

Have not been in for years, popped in for a quick orange juice at opening time today, looking for a new local as mine not welcoming as it was. Lovely smile and hello from young man as I walked in. Although nobody else in at the time doors just opened it had a nice feeling. Looking forward to going back for my after work drink .

User

Had the steak and ale pie was very nice best I have ever had and thank you to the staff very friendly and helpful

User

Had a birthday meal there today.

food was great and staff were lovely

thank you

User

First time I've visited and have to say walked straight to a table ordered drinks and food and was eating 20 minutes later , I had the famous chilli and was fantastic, I can only judge it from my one visit but will definitely be going again soon

User

Consistently good tex mex. Good sized portions and very tasty. Need to book friday-sat but we have realised that after 8pm there normally is a table or two available. Selection of ales could be changed more often but they have enville and directors on tap so can't complain.

User

Been coming here for a few years now nearly always for a late lunch. Can’t get enough of the sizzling fajitas combo, absolutely superb and always brought to the table within 10 mins of ordering. Staff always friendly too.

User

Firstly, the Food was good, hot, well presented and as expected.

Secondly, the one desert was off the menu after ordering and was only told at the table. This was replaced with another choice, but I hate having to scrape around a large square plate to gather up my drizzled sauce... Please, please, just put it on the desert...

Thirdly, from our party of three, only one had a starter and we all had menus. These were taken from our table before we made our choice of mains.... A question of "have you finished with your menus", I think would be more appropriate....

Other than these minors, we had a really nice filling meal..

User

Food was great as always. Staff were lovely. i don't mind paying alot of money for good quality food, but to pay over £20 for 3 drinks was ridiculous. I was disappointed. It lets the pub down badly when you provide such lovely food.

User

Food was good when it arrived very slow coming out

User

completely hostile, patronising, and unprofessional staff members including tattooed female duty manager. Waiting clarification of email to general manager for formal complaint to be handed in regarding our experience and reviews will be made on social media and internet review sites. 21 family members will not be returning to your establishment after such horrendous treatment.

User

Terrible place don't go very rude manager and staff. Beer overpriced!! Stay away!
