The Black Swan at Oldstead was created by The Banks family who have lived and farmed around Oldstead for centuries. The current generation are so rooted in the surroundings that The Black Swan could only be at Oldstead.

Kaye, our Junior Sommelier, has just returned from quite the trip! A foodie pilgrimage some may say. A visit to The French Laundry, SAISON, Manresa and Benu Restaurant 👀 And with more than 400 vineyards in Napa Vally she couldn’t possibly pass through without stopping off to sample a few wines.

ANNOUNCEMENT
We’re collaborating with Cooper King Distillery 🙌🏼 We’ll be working with them to make a range of bespoke spirits using produce from our garden. After extensive trial distillations, the first of the new spirits went in to production last week. Created using Marigold flowers which we hand pick and hand deliver to Cooper King Distillery in Sutton-on-the-Forest.

WE HAVE OLDSTEAD HONEY 🐝 • It’s been a rollercoaster year for our bees. In January we sadly thought our hives had become inactive, which was quickly proven wrong by Mr Craig our bee expert who found that BOTH our hives had kept themselves going through winter 💪🏻Then most recently our hives swarmed, and once again we thought we’d lost our little Oldstead bees. BUT it appears we must have a lot to offer as they’ve RETURNED! ✊🏼 And not only that, Cosmin, our latest recruit is a keen bee keeper (handy) He’s extracted our first batch of OLDSTEAD HONEY and its delicious!! 🐝😍 Keep an eye out for honey on the menu this winter 👀

| NEW DISH | Oldstead Onion & Gooseberry. • Onions from the farm sat in gooseberry and apple juice combined with Lemon verbena, Chamomile and Lavender then split with a Elderflower oil. Topped with Gooseberries coated in lovage vinegar.

Why can’t you give 10 stars?!? We came for a meal on the eve of my 50th birthday. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It was the best meal I’ve ever had in my life. I am not ashamed to say that I had such an emotional response to the food that I actually teared up during the plum and kernel. So refreshing to see the veggies bigged up so well. As long time allotmenteers we are always looking for new ideas for gluts so went away fizzing with inspiration. Can’t wait for the book to come out. Your service is also impeccable. We knew this was going to be good - but we never expected it to be SO good! Absolutely incredible culinary experience.

Here’s a great tip - when browsing the drinks menu and wine list - go for the drinks package that perfectly aligns each course with the relevant recommended wine, beer and cocktail. Perfect!

We had an amazing meal last night at The Black Swan. The experience was second to none from start to finish. Each course was mind blowing, and the wine pairings were perfect. The service we received was outstanding, with every team member knowledgable, hard working and a credit to the restaurant. Personal highlights were the beetroot dish, the chicken dumpling and the duck dish, but everything was outstanding and absolutely delicious. We’ve heard amazing things but now we can confirm....the best meal we’ve had! I highly recommend The Black Swan. You will not be disappointed. 5 stars, and we would give more if we could! Well done!

We drove five hours to get to The Black Swan and we weren't disappointed! What an amazing dining experience from start to finish! It was our fourth wedding anniversary and we wanted to do something very special in celebration! Will we be back? You betcha we will! The Black Swan should be on your bucket list....

Six of us stayed here last night for the first time and were blown away by the whole experience. We met Tommy in the car park as we arrived, he'd been off picking something from the garden, he said a cheery "hello" and "welcome", then disappeared into the kitchen. What a hidden gem, peaceful location, exceptional food, fizz, wine, accommodation and hospitality. Tommy presenting some of the dishes to the table during service was a real bonus. There’s a friendly buzz about the Black Swan; all of the staff are so knowledgeable and friendly. The service is exceptional. Kay deserves a special mention as absolutely nothing was too much trouble for her, she looked after us a brilliantly and with a real sense of honest enjoyment. Thank you to everyone who made our visit so memorable.

We intend to visit again soon.

The Black Swan is a fantastic dining experience in a charming area of lovely Yorkshire. The tasting menu concept is brilliant - several courses of small bite plates that will have you saying, "this one was my favorite" (until the next course is served!) The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and full of good English cheer. You should definitely ask for the optional wine pairing, however their specialty cocktails are excellent as well. This is an absolute must if you are looking for an exemplary dining experience in Northern England.

Stunning experience! I can only say that our room was beautiful, cosy, & even homely. The Taster menu & wine pairings was second to none, & highly recommend. Every member of staff, friendly, attentive & we were made to feel at ease instantly. I know the meal really was the main event, but I also have to say the breakfast the following morning was honestly the best I’d ever eaten! Top marks, & will definitely revisit! Thanks to Tommy Banks, & all members of his team for making our time away a great one!

Second time we have been - I feel very lucky!

First time we went in January and had the winter menu - which I preferred, but the food last night was outstanding in a different way.

Particular faves last night were the pea tartlet, the chicken dumpling, the beef, and the ice cream sandwich.

The birthday card for my wife signed by the staff - including Tommy, was a lovely touch. It goes nicely with the signed book the daughters got for her as a birthday present!

I’d like to think we could go again for the Spring and Autumn menus - but that might just be wishful thinking!

Have waited since January for Monday night and it was well worth it!! Beautiful place, the room, Wakendale, absolutely gorgeous. Food was everything and more than we expected. The staff were so friendly and helpful too. To make the most of the experience I would say to stay the night in the rooms and definitely have the wine package. We will be back!

Excellent food and service from the moment we entered to leaving. Nothing was too much trouble for the waiting staff. They were knowledgeable about the food and it’s preparation. Comfortable surroundings without being stuffy. Would definitely recommend for a special occasion.

Belated 60th birthday treat. We had the lunchtine tasting menu and thoroughly enjoyed it. Difficult to pick our favourite dish as all were superb with amazing flavours. Would recommend this restaurant to anybody who loves amazing food.

Absolutley amazing! I wanted to book somewhere special for my partner's 30th birthday and we wasn't disappointed. Tucked away down a winding country road, it is definitely worth the drive out. We was made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived for dinner, at first sitting next to an open fire and sipping a cocktail (I would highly recommend the Forced Fizz or the lemonade with douglas fir). Once seated at our table, our waitress was very attentive, ensuring our drinks were always topped up. And then the food came and oh my!! I could've eaten 10 chicken dumplings and, if I had forgotten where I was, drank the madeira consommé out of the bowl!! And the root veg toast �� I'm not usually a seafood or fish person but I cleared every single plate! Every dish was out of this world, delivering on taste and texture. And the staff knew every single detail about each dish and answered all of our questions enthusiastically; it shows how much they love their job! I'm sure we will be talking about this meal for a long time. Thank you to all the staff for making our night so special! We will definitely be visiting again soon!

Absolutely amazing . All the staff were just lovely & the waiters so knowledgable. Was a big surprise for my husbands 60th , who’s also been a chef for 41 years . Would highly recommend. My husband is looking forward to trying some dishes from Tommy’s cook book Roots ,

A long awaited and anticipated visit - admired Tommy and his approach to cooking on Great British Menu for some time - and this visit was planned as hubby's Christmas present for last year.



We stayed in the Cockerdale suite which was a lovely airy suite with a fabulous wet room.



Our tasting menu was booked for 6.30 and it took about 3 hours in total. Highlights for me were the cod loin and parsley and tarragon sauce and the damson and kernel dessert.



Staff were knowledgeable and friendly, with each dish explained plus the accompanying wines if you'd chosen the wine package.



Breakfast was also excellent, and I really couldn't recommend The Black Swan highly enough. The only downside was not meeting Tommy - but at least my book was signed for me - I guess that's a consequence of becoming more high profile!



A truly amazing experience. Couldn't be anything but a 5* review.

A completely wonderful experience from the booking through to leaving. Everything was just as it should have been and we were made to feel very welcome on our arrival.

The food was just incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed every course and the accompanying wine/beer.

World class food - but not the best - miserly wine by the glass servings and the service was tardy

With 6 months up front cash flow (from the pay in full to book policy ) an investment in air conditioning would be a good idea - world class restaurants invest beyond food to present the best possible ambience levels of comfort and dining experience . Tommy banks has taken a low rent out of the way pub and turned it into a destination which is a credit but that destination needs work

Perhaps the forthcoming Roots restaurant will add style to the cooking quality ?
