Horrible place. Disgusting breakfast. Burnt mushrooms. Rotten grapes. Anti-hygienic cutlery, trays, tables etc. Uncomfortable bed. The old man who runs this place said it was a new mattress...maybe it was but a terrible bed frame from the last century explains probably everything. He should pay for making people stay in and even for free I would never stay again. Please remove the license of this place and retire this man. It is a robbery to pay his rates. Now I understand why you pay upon arrival...nobody would pay otherwise. Sad. I feel robbed.

When we entered the old building my son looked at me and said 'looks like a haunted house'. We became suspicious of this ourselves when confronted with the creature at the reception desk. He had the look of a man from the 19th century and the disdainful stare of a man tired of dealing with peasants he has been fiscally forced to allow into his large inherited country home.

A few minutes in our room and a quick look at the facilities available to us inspired a discussion on the different between being posh and being rich. It seems posh involves spending a lot of money on old things that don't work. For example a rich mans mattress would probably be made of extremely comfortable swan feathers however a posh mans mattress is made of wood and hard springs that dig into your back.

After a nights trying to sleep we journeyed downstairs for the short window were breakfast was available. Unfortunately because we had a dog we were directed to a tiny table in a separate room designated for guests with dogs. The man assured us this was because food hygiene laws prevent dogs from entering dining areas. Therefore we carried plates and cutlery from the breakfast room and tried to fit them onto the table. The man then told us what cooked food was available and after taking the order promptly returned with a cold plate of food. When I asked 'could we have some water' he became very angry that I did not say please and begrudgingly brought some to the table alongside a passive-aggressive comment.

This is not an exhaustive list of our grievances but some explanation to justify the one star review.

I went for a birthday party. The décor is quite old fashioned but in a good way. Wasn't a big fan of the buffet provided but still, it was ok. Didn't stay in a room.

Places with this much charm and character are rare. Sometimes 'luxury' isn't about features and services but about the space and environment to think and be. This is such a place. Wonderful.
