It is with regret that we give you the sad news that Andrew Bryden (Gloucester Lettering Arts) died last week. He had been failing for some time but he died peacefully. We will miss his quiet humour, his vast creativity and calm presence.
The Thanksgiving Service to celebrate his life will be on Friday 21st September at 12.30pm, at St Mary's Church Church Road... Yatton BS49 4HH

STOP PRESS! Due to the overwhelming popularity of the CLAS Festival 2019 all places are now taken and most classes have waiting lists. We can no longer accept any more applications. Thank you.

As we hit the deadline for applications to the next festival, here's a set of photos to remember Festival 2018. Thank you to those who sent them in.

Some reminders of our surroundings at Festival 2018 ... and a good quote we found on the wall of the upper teaching block's coffee lounge. Lot's of us took photos through the attractively shaped windows. And here's one of the Director's point of view in the dining room. Everyone brought lovely placename cards. Ann Mason did the stunning artwork for the signature book (with Yukimi's permission!) We all had such a good time.

Thank you for two wonderful workshops Yukimi!

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Mike Pratley's passing on 21st August. Mike's work was celebrated in 2017 with a big retrospective exhibition at the European Lettering Institute. This is another sad day for the world of lettering.

A huge "hip hip hooray" to our magnificent five tutors who were with us from around the globe at Festival last week. From left to right: Josie Brown, Jan Mehigan, Margaret Morgan, Yukimi Annand and Gemma Black. Geoff Morgan was taking an 'official' photo as the gala dinner was ending, so I sneaked in and grabbed this photo.

The response to this years festival has been fantastic! This testimonial from Mariette Hardman says it all:
“My head is buzzing with the wealth of information and visual stimulation of the first 2 days at the CLAS festival. The wonderful Margaret Morgan is challenging us to look differently, to listen, to stretch ourselves, to try out (what if?).... who ever know that a few little black squares or strips on a white sheet of paper could express such emotion and lead to interesting designs. Last morning to soak up as much as we can and then on to the next workshop. Having a fabulous time!”

Festival nearly upon us. Feeling like we're all fingers and thumbs? Like we've got two left feet? These mysterious footprints and others like them were on the pavements 4 years ago. Gone now. Ditto my favourite paint splash that looked to me like a storm trooper in a mirage. Hoping for a few gorgeous sunsets like this one. See you on Sunday.

Hills to climb. Grounds to stroll around. However will we get any work done! And is it time for dinner ...? Don't forget to bring your placename for the Festival gala in a fortnight.

CLAS is co-sponsoring Luca Barcellona's appearance at the much awaited Letter Exchange XXX Anniversary Conference in October. He is also teaching a workshop available to those who purchase tickets to attend the Conference. This workshop is bound to be very much in demand and we suspect it will sell out pretty quickly so hurry to secure your place to study with one of the most well-known and best love calligraphers and letterers around today !
