The Catch

'Fish' and 'chips' are often used in sentences that have absolutely nothing do with the delicious meal we all know and love – which just makes us crave them more! Have you got any idioms or phrases involving them?

A Chip On Your Shoulder – Although this originally derived from a practice of knocking a woodchip from someone's shoulder, we figured that chips are chips. This idiom generally means that someone is holding a grudge or has an issue about someti...hng.
Shooting Fish in a Barrel – This is from back when fish were stored in barrels, as many as they could fit in. It means that something is really easy, because if you were to shoot in the barrel it's a given that you'll hit at least one fish.

There's a definite winter bite in the air in Cambridge...
When we think of ice fishing, we think of a man sat by a hole in the ice with a fishing rod, hoping something will happen. Only in the last 20 years has this evolved, and now they have the capacity to drill and check several holes a day safely – and even use sonar to check for activity!
Bring in the fish and help them get warm... it's cold out there.

Time for the January sales! Cheap things you didn't know you needed, people everywhere and too many bags to carry.
Whilst you're out bagging yourself some bargains, you're going to need a pit stop. We're in the heart of it, opposite Primark... forget the diet, have some chips!

Not much beats a proper fish and chips. The first recorded takeaway Fish and Chip shop opened in London in 1860, and the first eat-in restaurant in 1896. The eat-in was carpeted and table-clothed and the meals were served on fine china with flowers as a centrepiece. This was the beginning of affordable dining for the working class, and began bridging the gap between what the rich ate, and what the poor ate – everybody likes chips.... Who says you can't make Fish and Chips heart-warming and festive?
