Club Member -Captain Andrew Wood, has spent the last eighteen months writing the novel ‘Hanham’ which he is proud to be launching this year. Based on the amazing true story of three Hanham brothers and their family, Hanham is an inspirational tale of love, kinship and sacrifice during the war to end them all.
Andrew came by the story in in 2015 when his father, a military historian, battlefield tour guide and former soldier himself, purchased at auction a tobacco tin that s...aved a young man’s life during the First World War, wedged into it the bullet sent to kill him. The lot however turned out to be much more than this rare piece of history and the truly inspiring story of the three Hanham brothers and their family was revealed.
The novel sees the Hanham boys, part of the Kensington Battalion, fight through the torrid winter of 1914, the Battles of Neuve Chappelle, Aubers Ridge, Ypres and Arras 1918. At home their eldest sister Kathleen struggles to hold together a family ravaged by war whilst dealing with her own complicated life.
Hanham will be released from two exclusive launch events this spring with the sale of ‘100 Limited First Editions’ that will each come with a historical artefact from the battlefields where the Hanham boys fought and a hand-written letter from the author explaining the significance of the piece. The first launch event will be at 7pm on the 28th February at Duke’s Auction House in Dorchester, Dorset and the second will be at St Paul’s Church, Hammersmith at 7pm on Saturday 2nd March. Learn more about the Hanham story and how to reserve your free tickets to these events at www.hanhamstory.com or follow Andrew on social media @Andrew Wood Books.
Hanham will be available to pre-order as ebook and kindle versions on amazon from the 1st February and a paperback version will go on general release March 1st.
Andrew served in the regular Army for the best part of a decade including a tour of Afghanistan in 2012 but he left in 2016 to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a novelist. He remains a reservist with The Royal Wessex Yeomanry and hopes you will all enjoy his novel Hanham and that this wonderful tale captures your heart.

Wonderful and full of tradition - as you would expect. I visit every time I am in London and the UK

We were guests for dinner via a voucher our son bought at an auction and we were treated like royalty. The food was excellent, the staff friendly but impeccable and John Scott the dining room manager made my husband and I feel very welcome. He took us on an informal tour as the dining room was quiet and we were bowled over by the paintings, history and architecture and I would love to be able to sit and read in the wonderful library. Our thanks to all concerned. We would love to return but as that is unlikely we will savour the happy memories.

We had a wonderful evening with drinks on the terrace inside. I was not planning on visiting so it was a very nice surprise. The club certainly has a lot to offer and my intentions are to return the next time I visit London.

This was my second experience at this lovely, historical building. Lunch a few months back and dinner on Friday. On both occasions the food was superb, the service wonderful and the ambiance a joy.

My wife and I were recently treated to an overnight stay at the Cavalry and Guards Club by our son, an officer in the Grenadier Guards.

The building is grand and oozing history, adorned with military artefacts. The staff were extremely polite and the location in Mayfair is exceptional.

Our room was very comfortable with views over Green Park.

A great place to stay.

Great people, great place..... highly recommended

User

Excellent. Stunning interior and a host of memorabilia that makes one proud to be British. The sacrifices made by so many is humbling. I'm honoured to have been allowed in and not having served with them.

Attended a function last night in aid of Blind Veterans. Excellent evening and great fun had by all on my table. Staff and volunteers incredibly helpful and friendly especially Darren who is himself blind but looked after us fantastically well. Also raised a lot for the charity. Congratulations to the organisers. Many thanks

Amazing Building, service and food. A really wonderful experience

A voucher bought by our son in a charity auction turned out to give us a wonderful dining experience. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. There was no restriction on what we could choose to eat and the champagne was superb. The added bonus was Manager John Scott taking us on a guided tour of the club after we had eaten. The history tied up in the club was fascinating and the quiet ambience and spectacular decor on our trip around the building very evident. Pity it is a members only club. I hope the Calvary and Guards appreciate what they have got. I wonder how we can smuggle ourselves in another time!

Unfortunately not a good experience for me. I had clothing stolen whilst working at the club.
