The pub was refurbished and renamed in January 2015 the name refers to Hercules Clay who was the Mayor of Newark during the civil war “Hercules Clay trice dreamt the beseigers had set fire to his house, and consequently moved his family to a place of safety The Clay dwelling was hit by a bomb on March 11th 1643. As a thanksgiving Clay bequeathed a legacy in perpetuity to be distributed in charity. ”
