Lancaster University Confucius Institute hosted the 17th BCLTS (British Chinese Language Teaching Society) International Conference. Keynote speakers included Professor Liu Xun from Beijing Language and Culture University and author of the popular textbook 'New Practical Chinese Reader', who visited us at The University of Manchester last week.

Did you get a chance to meet us at last Saturday's Community Festival here at The University of Manchester for some of our workshops?
If you enjoyed them, we run regular Chinese art sessions here at 180 Waterloo Place, like our next Chinese Brush Painting workshop next Tuesday ⬇️

The Community Festival at The University of Manchester last Saturday gave the children of Hua Xia Chinese School the opportunity to showcase the play 'The White Bone Demon', a story from the ancient Chinese book 'The Monkey King's Journey to the West'. The children (the youngest members of the school's drama group so far) were performing in Mandarin to a full house and exceeded everybody's expectations.
What a brilliant example of using language in different contexts to make it come to life, making the learning experience fun and more memorable because it is interactive and visual.

Brighten up the start of your week by joining us for our Chinese Calligraphy drop-in sessions on MONDAY! The traditional art of writing Chinese characters is a fundamental part of Chinese Culture and a great way to unwind after a busy day.

This Saturday, June 15th, we’re supporting Huaxia Chinese School in presenting ‘Fighting the White Bone Demon’ as part of The University of Manchester’s Community Festival!
Join us as the children from the school perform a story from the ancient Chinese book ‘The Monkey King’s Journey to the West’ in Mandarin. Don’t worry if you don’t speak the language, there will be English subtitles, too, so everyone can enjoy the performance.
We hope to see you there!

Have you made plans for the summer yet? Why not take up Mandarin by joining our 2-week intensive language courses in July?
We offer three different types of programmes at beginner and post-beginner level, where you can choose to focus on speaking, reading or writing. Alternatively, you can do a combined course to consolidate all three skills. 'Singing for Wellbeing' was the topic of the first UoM Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Seminar and we were delighted to play host at the International Society yesterday.
The Confucius Institute Choir Harmony 和 is looking for a new direction and Prof Caroline Bithell introduced us to the natural voice approach, which makes singing accessible to everyone and where language is no longer a barrier.
Just look at what the group achieved in only half an hour, singing a Georgian lu...llaby without music sheets and previous knowledge - it was a real buzz to be part of that.
We aim to host many more of these pop-up singing sessions on campus - so watch this space!
