The Duke of Buckingham pub were back at the #lifehouse on the 23rd August. Offering there guests dinner for the evening. It's an amazing charity that offers support to people that need a little help. At a time that they need that help. The volunteer of #lifehouse do so with out prejudice and judgement to those individuals. That's why were so pleased to be able to offer this small gesture.

Such a fabulous pub, the food is amazing! We have dined here many times and never, ever had a bad meal! I also arranged a girls Christmas meal last year and it was tasty and beyond. Totally deserves 5 stars for the quality of the food, the taste of the food and the most fantastic customer service. Don’t delay in booking at this most wonderful establishment!!

Just had our wedding reception there.. The food was fantastic and the guys who run it are so lovely and accommodating.

Everyone's still raving about the food!

Portion sizes are huge too.. This is great value for money. 5* all the way

I went as a first time customer to Duke Of Buckingham yesterday as part of a groupon for a two course meal. We had trouble deciding what to order, and they gave us a few extra minutes to decide what we wanted. The proportions were bigger and better than we were expecting. Our food was delicious, and they let us have a small break between our dessert.

We will be back at some stage.

Had a roast dinner today with family. Lovely service. Fab food. Staff very helpful. Would come back again and again. Same catering company that we had our wedding food and event hosted by at the Rugby Club run this pub and again we cannot fault them! Shame they were closing so early after food late afternoon on a Sunday as would have loved to stay longer, opening times vary, so message to book before going, if for food on Sundays.

User

Had Sunday roast, staff very good and quick to serve. Gorgeous food -although we felt veg was very hard (carrots felt raw). We were told to request soft veg next time. We were lucky they could fit us in so recommend booking. Gravy was to die for :)

This is the 5th year in a row that my family and I have come back here, so I can do the Great South Run. Overall, always been pleased with our stay!... Just a little disappointing that they, and the pub itself, don’t make any effort at all on the race day?... lots of the pubs that are on the race route do something to help the runners but ever year I run past our own hotel/pub, there’s nothing!?..... Well let’s hope they make more of an effort next year!...

Pop in a few times a year. Visited 29th December. Always great food and excellent service. The girl serving behind the bar and as a a waitress, was up beat, polite and singing along to the music, she seemed a very happy employee. She also asked if we needed the music turning down, a nice touch, but it was fine. The food; we both had belly of pork in a cider sauce with a chilli apple fritter and veg. It was tasty, hot and plenty of it. The veg looked a little tired, but actually tasted wonderful. The apple fritter was great.

As always good hearty food, great service. A little treat!

User

A notch up from your standard pub food, fresh cooked, decent selection, generous portions. Staff pleasant, beer kept well. For the price very good.

A lovely old style pub with a clean and pleasant character to it, as It has been very well renovated in recent years. They have a very varied menu, with some slightly different variations on old favourites. The prices are very reasonable (not cheap) and the portions are fairly generous, with maybe the Eton mess being an exception to this. Everything we had was delicious, but everything we saw almost gave us food envy. They have several very nice real ales, some lovely wines, and a good selection of other drinks on offer. It is set in the very historic heart of Portsmouth

We use this establishment quite frequently. Sorry to say tonight was not a good experience.

Think the chef has changed. A minute steak had been folded in half and pressed. This was passed off as a rump. The steak tasted bitter, which normally means the griddle has not been cleaned. We both ordered medium, but was well and truely well done . We would have ordered a dessert, but as we had waited so long we just ordered a liqueur coffee. This resulted in a "latte" with a brandy stirred in ..... yuck. ...

Will give them the benefit of the doubt and use them again as in the past it has been delightful.

The worst afternoon tea I’ve ever had...

We booked an afternoon tea via Groupon and made reservations direct as per the instructions, where I also indicated that we could not have any fish on the sandwiches. Upon arrival we were told we were being charged £5 for the menu swap (the swap that cost this extra money salmon and cream cheese was exchanged for cucumber and cream cheese)... I could not believe it. I explained that I wasn’t advised of this when booking but got the whole new staff routine. The sandwiches were fine the cakes and scones However where not... the scones arrived pre cut (had begun to get dry) and were served with jam and whipped cream (yes whipped ) no butter provided. The cakes were two big slices of Victoria sponge (that was massively undercooked) and two big slices of a purple and green concoction that was totally inedible (I believe it was possibly beetroot and pistachio) so the cakes were merely picked at... when I complained I was met with further excuses and even told well we don’t specify what cream we serve... an utterly terrible experience that left me embarrassed to have bought my mother to such a bad event. And not only were my complaints shrugged off I was still charged the extra money... the very worst of places for afternoon tea..

Horrendous for customer service. Me and my partner decided to head to southsea for a dog walk and dinner. We have a taste card and looked to see somewhere to go we haven't been before. We chose the duke of Buckingham. On phone call to ask could we come along and we have this card as stated by taste card. I was abruptly told they require 24 hours notice. At my shock I explained that it wasn't mentioned on the site. Well on that note I was informed I could be squeezed in as they were not that busy this Monday evening. I even asked what time would they prefer us to come along. 7.30 great ok. We came along and sat down at our prepared table and was lovely they had put a dog bowl down for the dogs, lovely gesture. The older waitress of the two very quickly took drinks order making us feel we were a massive inconvenience for her. Then abruptly told me only mains were part of the taste card selection. When I pointed out the taste card website says the discount is the al la carte menu and even starters are mentioned in the advert listing the waitress said "that's not what we pay for with taste card" so i asked to speak to the manager. He was in the kitchen cooking. "You will have to wait he is busy serving other customers" I was gobsmaked. Nothing about this experience was nice so far. He comes out with a half printed sheet of the taste card listing which I had in my hand and it clearly talks about starters and mains. I only said well if you only want to offer mains as the offer and need 24 hour booking notice you need to put it in the terms and conditions and that's not a problem. Well his response to be was "What do you want? A three course meal?" That was it. I was mortified and he made me feel awful. I came along for a nice quiet dinner with an offer they choose to do. Just not clearly and argued with me over it. I left. I will never ever go back if they don't want my custom that's fine. But didn't have to make me feel stupid or argue with me over it.
