About The Fine Art Society Plc

The Fine Art Society was founded in 1876 by a group of knowledgeable art collectors. Comprising a five storey town house in Mayfair, it is the oldest gallery in London still in its original location. Since its inception the gallery has always championed and worked directly with living artists, giving The Camden Town Group their first show and holding historic exhibitions that have since entered the canon of art history. The gallery was a pioneer of the solo exhibition, including James McNeill Whistler's famous 'An Arrangement in White and Yellow' in 1883, which was a precursor to the modern white-walled contemporary art gallery. In recent years the gallery has embraced the contemporary arts alongside its nineteenth and twentieth century heritage and increased cross-cultural links, particularly in Asia and Australia. The gallery is proud to represent an exciting group of artists and to invite other internationally recognized artists to participate in critically-engaged survey shows.
