About The Four Candles

Britain's Smallest Brewpub.

The Four Candles Description

An experimental real ale brewery crammed into a cellar little more than 3m x 3m - and the results sold in the drinking area above.

No regular beers, no big-brewery products and at least one guest ale on offer. Biddenden ciders, wines and fruit juices, Canterbury cheeses, local pork pies. Pork scratchings sold by the half-pint.

No lagers, no spirits, no piped music, no Sky TV, no wi-fi and we boast terrible mobile phone reception. So customers have to make their own entertainment. Be prepared to talk to the regulars because they will probably talk to you. (This is not a place for a romantic tete-a-tete).

Small drinking area but somehow we always manage to pack one more in. Perhaps, next time, that one might be you.

Green Hop Update 3: Along with Canterbury Ales and the Northdown and Canterbury (Foundry) Breweries, we were delighted to be part of Eddie Gadd's Collaboration Brew.
Here's a (slightly steamed-up) view inside the copper where 77kg of Fuggles and East Kent Goldings are meeting their destiny.
For those who like all the technical details, here's a shot of Gadds' head brewer Jon Stringer's brew sheet too!
... It should come out at around 5%ABV and we hope to have some on our stillage ready for next Friday's launch of Green Hop Fortnight.

We're very pleased to announce that we've made it into CAMRA's 2019 Good Beer Guide. Pressure is growing as Thanet's beer scene improves every year - so making the top 11 is not something we take for granted. Many thanks to all who voted for us.

Green Hop Update 2: This week we're mainly using Fuggles. Here they are, newly picked, at Ross Hukin's Haffenden Farm near Tenterden. Our 20kg were boiling (briefly) in our copper less than two hours after this picture was taken.

User

It's that time of year again.
This is what 20kg of Kentish Fuggles look like packed into the copper for our first batch of 2018 green hop ale. This will be a session pale. A bottle batch and three more cask versions of varying strengths to follow - using Challenger, East Kent Goldings and Bullion. Many thanks to Ross Hukins for getting these to us fresh from his hop garden at St. Michael's, Tenterden.

Nothing like this has ever happened at the Candles. Well, not quite as bad as this...

User

We can't fit in a snooker table. But now, thanks to Ali and Jenny, we can play pool at the Candles. Ali is pictured here showing off some of his trick shots....

User

We are delighted to announce that our old friends from Hartley Morris are to perform outside the Candles and Hogshead (Little Albion) at around 9pm this evening.
It's their farewell to Broadstairs at the end of what has been an excellent Folk Week. It has been great seeing so many of them again this year.

User

As her contribution to Folk Week Esther has offered to perform her rather fabulous "Lotus Pool By Moonlight" dance this evening at the Turner & Dickens Tank Trap opposite the Four Candles. 5.30pm-6pm-ish (Weather Permitting).

User

Fair weather or foul, the Four Candles is open for ale, cider, wine, singing and shenanigans from 12-11pm every day during Folk Week. Just thought I'd mention it.

User

Campsite shenanigans go better with a Candles Ale. Two exclusive brews ready for the tent folk.

User

Why not make the least of Saturday's World Cup showdown against Sweden - by not watching it at the Four Candles?
We're open all day 11.30am and have various interesting beers to take your mind off all the kicky-kicky madness.
Alternatively... Take home four pints of any ale for £11 (cider £12) and watch it there.

User

Anyone fancy joining us on a Four Candles minibus tour of Herne, Herne Bay, Tankerton and Whitstable on Saturday 7th July? The plan is to leave at noon and be back in Thanet by 4pm. Only 15 seats. £5 books your place. Sign up at the Candles.

User

Greetings Candlers:
As many of our regulars may know, my family is rapidly outgrowing the two-bedroom flat above the 4C's - and the boys badly need a garden to play in.
So....
... If you know of a three- or four-bedroom house coming up for rent within walking distance of the Candles and St Mildred's Primary Infant School, Esther and I would be very interested to hear about it.
Many thanks,
Mike

This time last year The Four Candles hosted a reenactment of the Battle of Bossenden Wood (May 1838) - the last battle on English soil. A presentation will be made to Mike and Janice at The Four Candles of a collage of pictures from this reenactment. All welcome. Let's hope Janice doesn't get tied to a tree again!

User

Yesterday we said goodbye to a good friend from the Candles. We miss you Keith.

User

Many thanks to everyone who baked and ate at yesterday's Great Beery Cake Off. Organiser Rebecca Weller did a brilliant job and we raised £250!

User

Beer and cake or cake and beer? It’s a dilemma and it’s today!

User

Don’t forget that this is on Saturday, you’d better start planning those royal cake and pie recipes! If you can’t bake then come along to eat (and drink). It’s a great cause!

User

We are quite excited about this event. Beer, cake, friends...what's not to like?

User

was a very busy day for Jill and I yesterday (1st Sept). Bowling with friends in the morning, swimming at Stone bay in the afternoon, a great meal at the peninsular, followed by a great pint here. don't get much better than that.....

User

You have to go there! We went there yesterday and got a fantastic welcome, drank amazing ales and ciders and ate Kentish cheeses. My new favourite pub - can't wait to go back!

I'm not an Ale or Cider drinker ( I had the delicious Spanish wine ) but the hour or so that was spent in this tiny welcoming pub was filled with pleasant conversation , laughter and the good company of the locals and their dogs.

The lady serving drinks was absolutely lovely .

A really nice friendly little pub . Loved it .

User

Having visited last night, and enjoying a taste of real ale (as well as plenty of the wonderful cider!), the informal, vibrant and friendly atmosphere and last but not least catching up with an old friend and conversing with an excellent landlord (thank you Mike), I can highly recommend this fabulous micropub, and without doubt will be visiting again soon.
