About The Gazette
The Gazette is the UK's official public record and has been recording national and international events for over 350 years.
The Gazette Description
The Gazette is the UK’s official public record, and is comprised of three publications: The London, Belfast, and Edinburgh Gazette. The first Gazette issue was in 1665 as The Oxford Gazette, and though the nature of its contents has evolved over time, its standing as the official public record has remained.
From England’s Glorious Revolution to despatches that detail events of the Crimean War, and honours and awards for gallantry or meritorious service – as well as officer commissions, appointments and promotions, and casualties – it’s a key resource for the researcher. Genealogists can sketch out a soldier’s career, and insolvency notices can help track an individual or company’s financial history. As The Gazette has evolved, so has the nature of what is included in its pages, though royal milestones remain a constant.
The Gazette is also the official home to the Queen’s Birthday and New Year honours, which are published on the Queen’s official birthday in June and in the New Year.
