The term 'coming up to scratch' derives from the touch testing process. Traditional sampling involves a series of ‘touch tests’. In the touch testing process, the articles are lightly rubbed onto a ‘touchstone’ made from basonite. This leaves a thin smear of material on the stone. Chemicals are applied to the smear and from the reaction that takes place, an initial indication of the fineness is determined. #FactFriday - The earliest #hallmarked item in the The Goldsmiths' Company collection and one of the earliest pieces of fully marked secular plate. Found in the roof of St Andrew’s Church, Middleton, Yorkshire, and subsequently purchased by the Company in 1976. Similar in style to a chased, lobed spiral cup and cover in #GoldsmithsCompany Arms, dated 1480-1500.
... Exhibited in “Gothic Art for England 1400-1547.” Victoria and Albert Museum, London, September 2003-January 2004.

Thank you to Charlotte and Robert for taking some great photos of the hallmarking process of one of my rings. I haven't had a chance to come on a tour so seeing what happens is great.

Love what the London Assay Office stands for. As a Belgian based jeweller I still prefer the London Assay Office to check and hallmark my work. It is a quality control for my work, their strict practice is unfortunately not applied in the same way in Belgium, although I have had my British hallmarks registered with The Royal Belgian Mint, I still have the London Assay Office hallmark my work.

I just had my first packet (well a few weeks ago now) after being registered (unused) for a few years,

Fast service and everyone was very helpful, from the gentleman at the desk who took my packet in & explained the paperwork to a dunce like me, to the people on the phone - all excellent - thank you!

Friendly, personable and efficient. If you want/need something a bit different done they are always happy to oblige if possible.
