The Highlander

About The Highlander

Charlotte and Eric make sure you’ll always find a warm welcome here – along with their irresistible menu! Classic English dishes with a French touch and traditional Sunday lunches.

The Highlander Description

The Highlander is a landmark pub in this historic town. A proper, old English Free House with all the informal, rustic charm of its 300 year history revealed by the recent restoration. It’s warm and cosy in the winter, with a comforting, open log fire. In the summer, there’s a secluded beer garden and patio. And, of course, there’s a well-chosen selection of wines and beers - including locally brewed cask ales.

Hello folks.
We’re still here isolating above the Highlander. Thank you for your well wishes and messages and offers of help and support. We’re really fine, tired and scared but fine. It’s probably no more than an annoying cough for a small boy and me, but who knows if it’s not something so much more serious for someone else.. we probably won’t know. Feels like some kind of dystopian nightmare. We’re still uncertain of everything and struggling to find a way forward an...d staying out of the way while we sit out the 14 days is limiting, but will keep you updated as soon we can.
We do have about 5 casks of ale in the cellar, vented but not tapped, and ready to go for £2 / pint. (Contactless only pls). If anyone would like a take away Maddy will be downstairs tomorrow from 4-8pm. Please bring your own vessels, bottles, jars, flasks.
And please PLEASE ask your older loved ones, and vulnerable ones, and expectant ones.. to stay home and come back safe and well when this storm has passed 🙏🙏

I can’t believe I’m writing this.
We’re deeply regretful that the Highlander will be closed now until further notice.
One of the boys woke up with a cough so we’re following the government advice to self isolate for 14 days. We have a duty of care to costumers and staff, and our family. I can’t quite believe I’m writing this.
... The government have advised against social interaction, our friends and family in France will be in enforced confinement as of tomorrow. It’s too bizarre but we’re painfully aware of the severity of the situation.
I couldn’t find a suitably appropriate image.. nothing will come close to summing this up.
We’ll keep you updated with any changes as soon as we know.
Take care everyone. Please look after yourselves ❤️🙏❤️

Good afternoon folks. These are very strange days indeed. We’re open for now. I wouldn’t say as usual as everything seems very alien right now and nothing is very usual or familiar. We’re doing everything we can to provide a safe environment for our customers, staff and family and adhering to intense cleaning, hand washing, asking customers to pay by card, and if they are feeling unwell, with any flu like symptoms, particularly a fever or cough, we do wish them a quick recovery but to please come back when they’re on the mend. With changes happening so quickly we are finding it increasingly difficult to stay ahead of the game.
This is uncharted territory for literally everyone but we would like to add a big shout out to all those in hospitality in Hitchin and beyond.
Stay safe and healthy everyone 💙

Getting fully festive!! 🔔🎄🔔🎄🔔
We’ve had wreaths adorning this old door for years. It’s such a special symbol of welcome... which you all most certainly are!
Couldn’t be happier this year with our fabulous festive wreath from the wonderfully talented Beth @potsinbloom.
... We’re so spoiled for choice for inspiringly green fingered talent in this little town. I like to think that this could have been an alternative career path.. but then I hear of the 3am starts!
So merci mille fois @potsinbloom. We adore our wreath ❤️.
And to all the other florists in Hitchin making our homes and businesses, and weddings, and not least wakes, look so beautiful.. especially on a cold winters day!

As most in Hitchin we’re very interested in these plans. Other than the wider problem of air pollution, the immediate increase in traffic in and out of Hitchin right on the Highlander’s doorstep.
