B is for Bikram
I’ve now been practicing Bikram yoga for 10 years (and teaching it for 6). When I first took it up I hadn’t exercised for 20 years, was a heavy smoker and drinker, about 3 stone/20 kilos heavier than I am now and a very long way off being able to touch my toes!
The Bikram sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises is specifically designed with beginners in mind (although people continue to practice it well into old age as I plan to!)
... And this is what I love about it: its inclusivity, because it’s not about how much you can do; it’s about doing what you CAN do and working to your own personal edge because THAT is the sweet spot; THAT is where the therapeutic benefits are reaped.
This yoga has helped me lose weight, gain flexibility, increase my strength and cardiovascular fitness, improve my concentration and helped my mental health in times of need.

Good luck to all the pupils (and parents!) with your revision & exams. I am with you on the study front, currently doing the final nutrition exams and clinical practice sessions ready to qualify this Summer!
Last week I did a relaxation workshop for year 11 at Leicester Grammar School to help them prepare for their GCSEs. We did 15 minutes of stretching, breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques. Hopefully this will help any last minute nerves and worry!

If you thought mushrooms were all about stir-fries and psychedelics, think again! Just got back from this fascinating conference all about the therapeutic uses of fungi or “mycotherapy” for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, depression, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, leaky gut, asthma, allergies, dermatitis, T2 diabetes and cancer treatment support. Also, great for building children’s immune systems in their crucially formative first few years. A is for almonds and apples! This is the perfect combination to ensure slow release of energy to avoid blood sugar spikes and crashes. The nuts contain protein and healthy fat which slow down the absorption of the carbohydrate from the apple. So when you grab a piece of fruit to snack on grab a handful of nuts as well. Other great combinations are: walnuts & pear, Brazil nuts & banana. Or sliced apple with any nut butter spread.

Happy siblings day, everyone! I'm lucky enough to have several: 6 sisters and 2 brothers in all - sounds like a lot but they are mostly steps and halves, spread out between 2 families and several parents!
Here is a selection: my only 'whole' sibling, brother Ben and me, then we have my half sister Beetle and me in Sicily on her wedding weekend, my half sister Blue and me at a festival and finally my step-brother Nicko, desperately trying to grow a moustache for Movember!
I love them all to pieces and feel truly blessed to have grown up in two big families. ♥️ Also, first 2 photos (Ben & me, Beetle & me) were taken by my dear friend, the amazing Joth Shakerley 😊

On request (promise!) from my wife for Mother’s Day, I put together a 10 minute ‘mummy & me time’ warm up exercise routine. For this to work regularly you will need a mat, a room without children for 10 minutes and a nice cup of tea for afterwards.
#OOTD Bex was wearing... no makeup, her 6 year old pjs (@pyjamahouse) and her snotty baby Indigo. 😂
The making of this time lapse took longer than it looks! With thanks to Ninjago and the lap top for keeping Zephyr occupied. And a delicious cup of tea made by ME, served in a beautiful mug by @thenorthernpotter. Imperfectionism at its best!

March’s yogi is Christine Giles and I’m so chuffed with her progress! Here’s what she has to say:
“Really pleased after seeing my knee surgeon today to be informed I do not need an operation after suffering a severe ACL tear back in December 2018. ... Instead of resigning myself to a long and sedentary waiting list, I did Harry’s Hot Yoga & Hot HIIT Pilates twice a week. Doing the yoga and Pilates has helped immensely and whilst most people would resign themselves to an operation, I went to Harry’s classes on my crutches the day after my accident when I couldn’t even lift my leg! My surgeon is surprised and delighted with the outcome and will be recommending this course of action to other patients in future! So a big thank you to Harry for putting up with me on the days that I was so down, it has really helped me in mind and body. Thank you Harry 😇”

🐢H A L F T O R T O I S E 🐢
Today is World Sleep Day and as such, there is a posture in the Bikram series which can help out if you're having trouble in this area: Half Tortoise / Ardha Kurmasana. It can be practised out of context, anytime, anywhere; no-one will mind! Whenever I have suffered from insomnia, I hop out of bed and hold this pose for a good 2 or 3 minutes and it really does the trick! Here you can see my lovely group of yogis from yesterday morning's class holding it beautifully.
