About The Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts is a specialist university level institution for performers and those who make performance possible.

The Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts Description

The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts opened in 1996 to forge a new approach to performing arts training. It was co-founded by our Lead Patron Sir Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty (LIPA's Principal), and is housed in his old school, which underwent a multi-million pound renovation to transform it into a state-of-the-art performing arts higher education institution.

Today LIPA has a reputation for being one of the UK's leading higher education institutions. LIPA provides education and training in performing arts, theatre and performance design and technology and management disciplines in a hands-on, collaborative environment.

LIPA offers degree courses in Acting, Applied Theatre & Community Drama, Dance, Music Theatre and Entertainment Management, Music, Sound Technology, Theatre and Performance Design and Theatre and Performance Technology. We also run full-time one year Foundation Certificates in Performing Arts (Acting); Performing Arts (Dance); Performing Arts (Singing); and Popular Music and Sound Technology.

We train students for a future of sustained employment. Most recent figures have shown that over the most recent four year period, 93% of LIPA’s graduates are in work three years after leaving, while 87% work in the performing arts. To achieve this, our curriculum is constantly being revised.

We offer a range of programmes, including:

: : Foundation Certificate courses and undergraduate courses offering BA (Honours) Degree programmes for applicants aged 18 and over
: : Performing arts classes for 4 - 19 year olds

We've upgraded our Digico live console provision with the purchase of a Digico SD12.
Sound Technology lecturer Chris Layton and LIPA technician Jack Condell spent the day with Wigwam Acoustics Ltd staff in Heywood, where they received their training from Sound Tech graduate Will Cooper - who is Wigwam's Technical Support Technician.
The new console is ready to be used for teaching and on productions from the start of this term.

We have been to several performances at LIPA. We enjoyed the musicals best, Rouge, Stop the world, and the Christmas evening. It's a beautiful venue and who wouldn't want to step out of uni and have a cathedral right in front of you. Looking forward to seeing some new shows in 2017

User

Three years of regular LIPA visits to enjoy Liverpool and in particular to watch student productions that our son John Ellis had contributed to in many different back stage roles.

We loved them all and considered the performances excellent in every way. First class acting performance complemented by wonderful choreography, stage direction, costumes and sets all beautifully wired for sound and light.

Remarkable that so much has been achieved in three years and we are eternally grateful to the LIPA staff who have transformed our son and a whole generation of aspiring performers and technicians into young people very well equiped for the stage and life in general.

The first show I saw here was in about 2000 and was snoopy- my childminder played peppermint patty... she has since starred in auf wiedersehen pet, life on mars, a short stay in Switzerland & the woman in black to name a few.
