About The Mad Hatter, Margate

Victorian tea rooms in Margate's old town serving traditional English food. From Champagne teas to delicious home made cakes, sandwiches and more, the menu won't disappoint!

The Mad Hatter, Margate Description

Described by The Guardian as "old-fashioned English eccentricity at its glorious best, " The Mad Hatter's quirky decor reflects proprietor Peter Clements-Bullett's disregard for the ordinary. Filled with music from the 1930s, antiques, royal memorabilia, year round Christmas decorations, Victoriana and (of course) the odd Alice in Wonderland memento, The Mad Hatter is a welcome escape into the nuttier side of English life. With no need to book ahead and no minimum table charge, patrons are welcome to simply sip tea (or whatever tickles your fancy) and soak up the atmosphere of this unique sea-side tea shop.

User

What a lovely little tea room. Quaint, quiet and quite amazing. Took the parents, brother and 4 small children along. Everyone was catered for, the children were accommodated and the staff very attentive. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys afternoon tea especially as you get a choice of different scones, different cakes and a selection of jams. If you like your historic buildings too, this place will definitely appeal to you ’┐Į

User

Went on there this afternoon with little Ellie who's 6 she had the kids afternoon tea which consisted of sandwiches scone with fresh cream and jam plus little mini cakes and I have to say it was lush Ellie particularly loved having het blackcurrant juice in a tea pot and being able to pour it into her tea cup like a grown up there was so much that I had to help her out and eat some of her cake ! such great value for money. Ellie is already asking when can we go back ! my lemon driz0z0le cake and tea were also delicious

User

We visited yesterday and had the Victorian afternoon tea which consisted of sandwiches,a choice of plain or fruit scone and a choice of many cakes (mint aero for my daughter, twix for me). This was all washed down with several cups of refreshing loose leaf tea.All the food was delicious, the decor was lovely and the service was really friendly. We will definitely be back!!

User

We visited this afternoon and as soon as we walked through the door and were made to feel very welcome. We sat in the garden and it felt very homely. The menu is so varied, there is something to literally suit everyone. I am not exaggerating but the loose leaf tea was the nicest tea I have ever drunk. It left a lovely after taste. I loved the way all China matched. The best way I can describe it is the most PERFECT British afternoon tea. Also loved that you can order Pimms, perfect for a summers dat! CanŌĆÖt wait to come back ’┐Į Thank You x

User

We popped into this lovely tea room on a day out in Margate, having seen pictures of the cakes the day before online, and therefore we thought we had better go and sample these delights. We had a Victorian tea platter which was beautifully presented, very filling & great value for money. It is a quaint and cosy tea room with a wonderful selection of teas, sandwiches, cakes.......so many lovely cakes! ’┐Į the owners are friendly & welcoming and they cannot do enough for u....we will definatly be coming back to sample some more delightful treats in the near future.

User

We popped along and had the Victorian afternoon tea for two, we were not disappointed. The sandwiches were lovely, the scones huge and delicious and the cakes, I had lemon drizzle and my girlfriend had the coffee and walnut, were incredible!

The tea room itself is a lovely warm corner of Margate, and Jamie and Heidi have breathed new life into a wonderful place!

User

The quality of the afternoon tea here is the best in Thanet! If not Kent! Freshly prepared and baked goods, sandwiches and whole leaf tea satisfied me and then some! I booked a table as an early celebration for MotherŌĆÖs Day. I canŌĆÖt wait to go back. Amazing hosts as well. Thanks for reviving the Mad Hatter!

User

Thank you to all at the Mad Hatter for making my birthday special yesterday. Everyone loved the experience.

The best homemade afternoon tea in Margate with delicious scones and a selection of cakes to die for, all made by the owners. Plus a glass of champagne, can't ask for more.

And now the garden is open, a lovely sun trap.

Bliss.....

I visited The Mad Hatter today with my toddler and mum for a belated Mothers Day tea for my mum. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating for my toddler. The place is beautifully decorated and we were all eyeing up the delicious cakes as soon as we walked through the door. Myself and my mum shared a tea platter and there was not one item on there that we did not enjoy and devour. I loved that they had a children's section so that my son could have his own tea platter, I wish I could post photos in a review so you could see the pure delight on his face when it turned up. His squash was served in a teapot with cup and saucer, such a lovely touch and made him feel like a grown up. Thank you for a lovely time and we will definitely be visiting again!

User

I took my niece to this lovely tea room today for her birthday afternoon tea. I'm so glad we booked in advance as it was very busy! But despite this the staff were so welcoming and attentive. The food was delicious and the selection of scones and cakes were to both of our tastes. I will definitely be returning to see what delicious cakes are on offer next time I'm in Margate.

User

Everything you would expect in a tea shop and so much more. I will recommend it to everyone. One of the best afternoon teas I have ever had, as The Mad Hatter has savory afternoon teas as well as the more traditional sweet based ones. Thank you.

User

Came here today for my 30th birthday and it was amazing.. was my 2nd visit here but hubbys first and he loved it so much too. We will definitely be returning!! The bread for the finger sandwiches were absolutely delicious and the Crunchie cake... I had requested... was moist and so light!! I could have sat in there all day sampling everything they have ’┐Į the waitress, a blonde haired lady was so lovely. Everybody in there was lovely. Thank you for adding the specialness (if that's a word) to my birthday ’┐Į’┐Į

User

Came here today and it was lovely :)

Welcoming, quirky and homely!

The couple that have taken it over are friendly and we were spoilt for choice with the menu.

Food was really lovely and the homemade and Kent grown touch to the menu was great to see.

Highchair avaliable for little one and space in the courtyard for the pram which was great!

Have told friends & family about the lovely food today and we shall be back to sample more!

Thank you :) x

Amazing place, absolutely loved it here, Its very quirky and the staff are very friendly. me and my nan came here and had the Victorian tea in the garden, the scones and cake slices were massive and their was lots of tea x

User

Absolutely love this place! It is by far my favourite tearoom and I have brought family members from all over the country to visit, who have all loved it too. In fact, my dad is a bit of a scone connoisseur and he considers the Mad HatterŌĆÖs to be the best!! The rooms themselves are full of charm and quirkiness, the food is to die for, the staff are so friendly and very accommodating. If you have any specific requests or dietary needs then nothing is too much trouble. Everything is reasonably priced and the highest quality. Is lovely to go somewhere that has all homemade food and an amazing selection! My favourite afternoon tea by far, and IŌĆÖve had lots! CanŌĆÖt wait for another visit soon!

User

Absolutely amazing place for (champagne) afternoon tea... we had the garden furniture moved around to accommodate all of us and the food and cakes were absolutely outstanding. Would definitely recommend this place - cool and quirky, had lots of fun and catered for all our needs including Gluten Free - Thank you
