About The Magic Attic
The Magic Attic is a large local history archive located in South Derbyshire at the Sharpe's Heritage Centre in Swadlincote.
The Magic Attic Description
The Magic Attic was started in 1987 by local historians who were interested in preserving information about the area.
The Attic is based in Sharpe’s Pottery Museum but we are completely independent of the museum. We are a registered charity run completely by volunteers.
Although strongly focused on South Derbyshire and North West Leicestershire, the archive material also covers East Staffordshire, other parts of Derbyshire and other counties of the UK.
The archive holds a wide range of material and is an invaluable source of information for research students, schools, family historians and village history groups. We welcome groups to come and ‘take a tour’ by prior arrangement.
We also take out our ‘Roadshow’ of records and photographs to Family and Local History exhibitions. Talks on local history can be arranged either at the Attic or at outside venues.
We also hold monthly talks on local history and other topics at 7. 30pm on the third Wednesday of each month. Admittance is by ticket only, price £2. 50.

Swadlincote Festival of Transport 2019, what a great success! Well done to all involved.
Martin has this to say, "Thomas the Tank engine set up, attempting to show the rail system between Moira and Gresley. It covered 8 tables, 6*3 feet each, that's 144 square feet! Enjoyed by all ages. It's going on eBay tomorrow as a job lot, buyer collects."
Salvation Band is the latest 5 in Harmony track to feature images from our Archive.
5 in Harmony were proud to have performed for Swadlincote Salvation Army recently at their Fundraising Evening which raised over £300.
"For this year's Transport Festival, the Magic Attic will attempt to recreate the rail system around Moira Baths using Thomas the Tank Engine, photos and Tomy action sets. Not for purists, suitable for all ages." Thanks Martin Wroughton!
