About The Mercian Regiment

The MERCIAN Regiment recruits and is manned by soldiers from the Midlands and Cheshire. We are a Light role and Armoured infantry unit of the British Army. Stand Firm, Strike Hard!

The Mercian Regiment Description

The Mercian Regiment is the Heart of England’s Infantry, recruiting from the five counties which formed the ancient Kingdom of Mercia: Cheshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire. We also cover the Black Country and the Wirral.

We formed on 1st September 2007 through the amalgamation of three existing Regiments. The Regiment has deployed on eight operational deployments since its formation, making us one of the most operationally experienced regiments in the British Army.

We work and fight as a proud, close knit family and live to our motto 'Stand Firm Strike Hard'. Through it, we deliver success on operations around the world. Professional, determined and fierce, Mercian soldiers are renowned for their professionalism and courage when deployed, and our reputation marks us out as one of the most effective and modern Infantry units in the British Army.

Alongside returning from Afghanistan, the Regiment has deployed on exercise to Cyprus, Lithuania, Uganda, Croatia, Kenya, Canada and more.

The Mercian Regiment is recruiting now, offering a unique range of Regular and Reservist roles, and excellent career progression for soldiers and officers. Interested? Send us a message now.

Merry Christmas everyone and especially to all those soldiers and officers deployed around the world today, far from their families and the wider regimental family.
We would like to thank everyone for their continued support, and look forward to another busy and eventful year as The Heart Of England's Infantry.

For those who haven't heard the news, as of today all roles in The British Army will be open to female applicants. So if you feel the Infantry is for you, but you previously could not join, go straight to The British Army website and get applying. https://www.army.mod.uk/…/corps-…/inf antry/mercian-regiment/
The first intake of successful female recruits should be starting their 26 week Combat Infanteers Course in April 2019. Commander Field Army, Lieutenant General Patrick Sa...nders CBE DSO, said: "Some of the best soldiers and most promising officers I know are women. And let’s not forget that women have been serving on the front line in combat, often under fire for the last 15 years. Simply put the Infantry will be more effective in war if we include the best talent our country can breed – male and female."
Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson praised the day as a defining moment in the history of the armed forces. He said: "I am delighted that for the first time in its history, our armed forces will be determined by ability alone and not gender."
"So by opening all combat roles to women, we will maximise the talents available to our military and further make the armed forces a more modern employer."
Best of luck to all those hoping to join. #StandFirmStrikeHard #FindWhereYouBelong

Today marks the 173rd anniversary of the Battle of Ferozeshah. The Battle of Ferozeshah was fought in what is now Northern India on December 21 and 22, 1845, during the first Anglo-Sikh War.
Among those involved were soldiers from the 80th Regiment of Foot; ancestor of the Staffordshire Regiment and in turn amalgamated to become part of The Mercian Regiment. In total 694 people were killed and 1,721 wounded.
It was Colour Sergeant Kirkland who captured the Sikh ‘Black Standar...d’ and this can be seen today in the regimental chapel at Lichfield Cathedral. In commemoration of this event, the battalion Colours are entrusted to the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess on Ferozeshah Day.
It is common for members and veterans of The Mercian Regiment to join the Sikh community on Ferozeshah Day in remembrance of all those who fought from both countries. #StandFirmStrikeHard #onthisday

Here is a quick preview of the new Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicle 1 Mercian have to look forward to. It has spent many years in development, had numerous alterations and some very impressive upgrades. The most notable upgrade is the turret-mounted 30mm cannon jumping up to 40mm; a devastating level of firepower that can even be fired on the move.

2 Mercian; based in Cyprus, were recently visited by the UK Joint Forces Commander; General Sir Chris Deverell. He also awarded our Support Company, in 2 Mercian with the JFC Commendation in recognition of their actions on their recent deployment to Afghanistan. This also happened to be Private Derby XXXII (Bravo's) first parade and his chance to prove himself as a strong Mercian ambassador. Bravo seems to of made a good first impression. #StandFirmStrikeHard

Congratulations again to the Infantry Swimming and Water Polo Team. Our Mercian representatives have done fantastically and we can all be proud of them.
Regular and Reserve Mercian soldiers have brought home 5 Golds, 2 Silver, 2 Bronze and a record from the Inter Corps Swimming Championships 2018.
5 soldiers from across The Mercian Regiment, both regular and reserve, competed at the Inter Corps Swimming and Waterpolo Championships 2018, 06-07 Dec 18.
... Swimming Results –
Pte Sam Oates (1 MERCIAN) won Gold in the 4 x 50m Medley Relay, Gold in the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay (beating the old Inter Corps record by over 4 seconds) and Silver in the 100m Individual Freestyle.
Pte Mike Adair (1 MERCIAN) won Gold in the 4 x 50m Medley Relay and Silver in the 100m Individual Fly.
Pte Peter Higgs (1 MERCIAN) won Bronze in the 50m Individual Backstroke.
LCpl Elliott Weaver (2 MERCIAN) competed in the 50m Individual Freestyle.
Capt Christopher Bermingham (4 MERCIAN) won Gold in the 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay, Gold in the 4 x 50m Breaststroke Relay and Bronze in the 50m Individual Breaststroke.
Waterpolo Results –
Capt Christopher Bermingham (4 MERCIAN) and LCpl Elliott Weaver (2 MERCIAN) represented the Infantry at the Waterpolo Inter Corps; Christopher was also selected as the Infantry Captain. Here are his thoughts on the Waterpolo Championships:
"This year the competition was split into 2 leagues with the Infantry competing in the top league. The Infantry went into the competition with a lot of new players who had never played Waterpolo before so there was a real risk that we could be relegated into league 2 next year.
However the team played in true infantry fashion; never giving ground away and always fighting hard to win the ball back. The Infantry team came 4th overall, which secured them a place in the top league for next year. Their best moments in the competition were against the REME (last year's champions) where they narrowly lost 5-3 and against the Royal Engineers where they won 11-2."
Congratulations again! #StandFirmStrikeHard #iamaMercian #belonging #infantry

This week our Ram Major and Ram Orderly have been at 2 Mercian, Cyprus. After a Cypriot farmer was kind enough to loan us a ram that we felt was up to the Mercian standard, he was then trained and groomed to become Derby XXXII Bravo.
Derby Bravo will be the unofficial mascot for our soldiers who are based in Cyprus. Very shortly we will find out if Derby Bravo can hold the same standard as our very own Derby XXXII here in England. #StandFirmStrikeHard #FindWhereYouBelong
