About The Mermaid Inn

Country pub and dining, comfortable surroundings and friendly staff

The Mermaid Inn Description

During the eighteenth century, Wolverhampton was on the main coaching route from London to Holyhead, and as a result became a popular place to stop and rest.

One of the main coaching inns in the area, The Mermaid Inn at Wightwick, has bizarrely also been occupied by a temperance organisation in the course of its history.

The Mermaid Inn, which still stands to this day and is now owned by Vintage Inns, was open for business by 1780.

As well as being a coaching inn, its location close to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal also meant that the inn was able to serve local bargemen. Very little is known about the Mermaid’s history over this period.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the fortunes of the Mermaid became closely linked with those of Wightwick Manor, as both properties belonged to the Mander family.

One of the main licensees during this period was a Sarah Hawkins, who was landlord of the Mermaid from 1881 onwards. An unmarried woman, she lived at the Mermaid with a couple of servants.

In 1900, Theodore Mander rented part of the Mermaid Inn to the People’s Refreshment House Association, under the management of a Godfrey Evennett and his family.

This temperance organisation was formed in 1896 in an attempt to manage the sale of liquor.

Rather than preventing the sale of alcohol, the Association attempted to work alongside public houses and dissuade alcohol consumption using more subtle means.

The Association’s system included paying the manager a fixed salary, so there was no incentive for them to sell alcoholic drinks, whilst allowing the manager a profit on trade in food and non-alcoholic beverages. This system continued in The Mermaid Inn until the 1950s.

The Wightwick Manor estate was sold by Geoffrey Le Mesurier Mander in 1921.

The original intention was to sell the entire estate as one lot, and a £20, 000 bid was received, but rejected. This led to the estate being split up into 34 lots. The National Trust took over Wightwick Manor in 1937, giving the Mermaid a new captive audience of tourists and visitors, and users of the nearby Smestow Valley and canal, which continues to this day.

Just to say this lady has been found. Thanks to everyone who shared!
Dear our lovely Facebook followers, if any of you live locally to The Mermaid, an elderly woman has been reported missing in the Wightwick area. She's been described to have red hair and to be wearing a blue anorak. If anyone sees her could you please call the police on 999 and make them aware of her location. Or if you could just share this post and hopefully the power of social media will see her home safely!

All the posts on here today regarding the family and their treatment are totally and utterly wrong. I was in the pub today and saw exactly what happened and the version of events detailed on here is totally distorted and wrong!

The family were eating and one of the children on their table was screaming repeatedly which young children do, the parents made no effort to take the child out to try to stop her. In fact one man on the table was heard to say that he would make sure she screamed louder just to annoy everyone.

A couple left and said something to the family as they walked out, then one of the women insulted a lady on another table, saying you can talk with that terrible perm of yours! So so rude. This lady with the apparent perm was sat eating dinner with her husband and her disabled daughter. Another lady then said to the family how dare you insult this lady like this you should be ashamed of yourself… to be honest she's right!!!

The family eventually left without paying their £150 bill. The poor staff of the Mermaid were not in any way at fault over this incident, we all know small children can be a handful but this family were just downright rude, sneering at other customers and they are now apparently barred.

These reviews are so unfair! This is a lovely little pub and the staff are great. I've worked in pubs 4 years and I know a good team when I see one. Maybe you should all wait for a reply off the pub than jumping to conclusions and trying to ruin its reputation.

User

disgusting the way your staff treated that family today. You should be ashamed of your selfs I will be cancelling my booking with yourself and will be spreading the word of that has happend!!!

User

You've done yourself no favours treating a family in such a disgusting way.. seeing as it was your fault they sat down late... no excuse for that... had they been seated at the time booked these young children would of been eating at that time instead of waiting around... as for the waitress apologising for them and the rude head waiter... think you should take a look at your staff too.. they obv have no idea how to treat customers... anyone can carry a plate to a table and call themselves a waitress but it entails more than that.... bloody disgusting and i hope word gets around . restuarants get customers through word of mouth not fancy advertising on social media ect... and as for your gobshite customers who felt the need to shout abuse ... well if thats the kind of people you want in your establishment .. good luck.. you wont last long... no one like a gobby shit when trying to enjoy their dinner either!!!

User

You should be ashamed you scummy bastards I may come to your pub just so you can gimme mouth about my kids and see how I react I asure you it wont be as kind and gentle as that poor family was

User

Wish this could be 0 star after hearing today about the disgraceful way a family with children were treated just because a one year old was making a bit of noise.... my family and I would NEVER even pass through the doors!!! Shame on the staff and shame on the other people who were eating in the restaurant who made this family feel so unwelcome and who clapped when they were asked to leave!!!! I hope they see these reviews they are absolutely despicable

Went there a few months ago. Went for a meal with my my girlfriend, my brother and his girlfriend. My brother had an issue with his coffee he ordered so went and politely complained. A guy which I'm guessing was the manager (I hadn't seen him before), tall and with tattoos came over and asked if we were okay because we seemed 'Very on edge' and full of 'anger', making us feel like we had done somthing wrong. Found it very intimidating and bang out of order. After drinking in there regularly for many years I haven't stepped foot in there since. Don't want to give them my money. The behavior I have seen on Facebook regarding the children is disgusting. But doesn't surprise me and all. What has happened to this once great pub?

User

Tonight I have experienced some of the worst treatment in the whole of my 27 years of life. We booked a table for 8 people at The Mermaid pub in Whitwick with my family. My 1 year old niece, my 4 year old niece and 6 year old son were with us to enjoy a meal to celebrate the fact I am due to have a baby in 3 days. We booked the table for 4pm- a reasonable time to sit down for dinner with a young family and the pub were aware of the ages of our children. We were eventually sat down at our table over 45 minutes later than booked (a long time for hungry children).

My niece, who is just over 1 years old starting to make some squealing noises partly because she is 1 and finding her voice and partly because she was hungry.

We had a table of three women literally shout across the restaurant at us "control your child". "Don't bring your children out if they are going to spoil everyone else's night".

We obviously responded to say that she was 1 and how on earth would you like us to 'control' her.

They carried on tutting and shaking their heads and making us feel very uncomfortable. Then the table next to them got up and came over to us and said "you got a problem?" And left. We had small children at the table.

Then another table stood to join in with the abuse.

(We did have a number of tables who had children absolutely astounded by how we were being treated).

We overheard the waitresses apologising for us being there.

The main waiter then came over and said "I am not going to tell you how to parent because that's not my thing but if your one year old is going to scream and shout then maybe you should think about where you go to eat".

We were nearly an hour late being sat down, there was no curfew on when children were allowed to eat and we were trying to enjoy a family meal.

We were told to leave and the group of tables that treated us disgustingly clapped as me and my family left.

I have never been so disgusted in my life. It is shocking and shameful and I hope people share this post so that they don't experience the same. I also don't feel the mermaid pub should be allowed to get away with such terrible treatment of a family.

PLEASE PLEASE SHARE!!! This is a family that where told to leave after there one year old was making a noise how rude and unprofessional of u to do this

User

The staff should be ashamed of themselves a poor 1 year old was clearly upset and hungry nd they were rude to a family who were out for a meal!! Your lucky I don't come in with my 2 year old and my 1 year old niece all they do is scream at each other!! And I wouldn't be so nice to you!! Absolutely disgusting and I hope you get a bad reputation for this and eventually get closed down!!

User

Social media is a powerful thing, how dare your staff ask a paying ppcustomer to leave because a one year one was crying, I can see by the way you treated the family that it seems that none of the staff are parents, what if that child was to be autistic? I'm not saying she was but I think your staff need some more training on how to be compassionate! It's hard being a parent as it is without people shouting...I know how it feels to have a hungry (teething) one year old it's really not pleasant experience! Damn right rude and I think you should apologise to the family expecially as the lady is due to have a baby in a few days......terrible!

User

Sad to hear such terrible stories about this place and I do think that some people that go there are up themselves... Like whatever. My experience of the staff has been okayish but the uncomfortable feeling of uneasiness is shitty.

User

Just don't understand how you can allow such disgusting behaviour from your pub/restaurant I have always thaught it was nice a but pricey but a decent place but that is awful from staff/management and then other customers there aswell I think you should all be ashamed of yourselves for doing that to a family after they have booked and everything losing my custom for good

User

I have not even visited this pub. After reading how a family was treated at the pub this evening, it's enough to put anyone off. I will be sure to give you a bad name.

Well done for taking yourselves off the map of pubs.

All your staff and other guests joining in on ruining this families experience should be super proud!

User

Crap customer service to a family that got abuse from other customers. All because a child was hungry and one years of age. How can management allow customers cheer a family out of a door. Those customers should be banned and more than an apology is needed. Chris who said he is the manager should be retrained or sacked.

User

Came here once last year, would never come again over priced & crap.. We were sat right at the back, obviously away from all the posh looking snoots sat by the log burners / fires at the front.. And after hearing about the family with children & how they were treated I am utterly disgusted!

User

Asking a family to leave as they have a one year old who is making a little noise like baby's do when they are hungry who the hell do you think you are gods gift I don't think so , you should be shut down a disgrace I hope ur mothers fathers or whoever teaches you some manners u obviously didn't pick up as a child

User

After hearing how your restaurent treats family with kids and letting people speak to them like that, when children are there ,and the waiter saying what they said ,I will not be eating there ever ,I have 3 grandchildren and thinks its disgusting how badly they were treated ,and was mainly down to the fact when you book for 4pm that's when you should be seated ,not 45 mins later ,especially when children are there ,

User

After eating in your restaurant a few years ago and finding plastic in my food and the service being awful I am now aware of the awful treatment and service you gave to a family this evening! As a mother myself I am astounded at how you let customers treat a family with hungry children which as a result of being 45minutes late to seat them meant of course they would be upset!!!! You and the management should be ashamed that you think that behaviour is acceptable!??? I have no words.......
