Beth Underdown’s debut novel The Witchfinder’s Sister, set in The Mistley Thorn, is a chilling and vividly haunting pick for the Richard and Judy Book Club Spring 2018. Based on the life of the 1640’s witchfinder Matthew Hopkins, Beth Underdown combines fact and fiction to illustrate the disturbing irrationality behind the Essex witch hunts. Set in 1645, Alice Hopkins, Matthew’s fictional sister, is forced to move back to her childhood town of Manningtree after her husband Jo...seph dies in a tragic accident. However, Matthew has changed since she’s been away. He’s gained influence in the community and made it his mission to expose women he suspects to be witches. As Matthew’s obsession grows more and more dangerous, Alice finds herself tangled in his sinister plan.
Richard describes The Witchfinder’s Sister as ‘distinctly unsettling’ whilst Judy notes how ‘Beth Underdown brings us up close and personal to the madness and horror’ of the witch hunts.

What a fabulous hotel & restaurant on the estuary. Our room was beautifully appointed with lovely toiletries. Our meal was delicious, beautifully cooked with lots of local food, especially fish on the menu. Breakfast was a treat too- so much variety to cater for all tastes. And the staff are such a joy, so friendly and helpful and always smiling. We highly recommend

We had a table for four on Saturday night, yum, yum, yum! Great food with some unusual things on the menu and the service was really good.

User

We had a really lovely time at the Mistley Thorn. The food and staff were excellent. We stayed for one night and the room we had was great with a gorgeous view of the estuary although the floor level left something to be desired! Would thoroughly recommend the Mistley.

Visited yesterday for a girlie lunch and was suitably impressed. Attentive friendly staff. Well presented and tasty food. Nice buzz to the place and a varied menu which was pretty reasonably priced (especially the lunch set menu of 2/3 courses). Will definitely visit again.

User

Very accommodating, we have turned up today and they have literally rearranged seating to fit us in to there fully booked restaurant. Absolutely amazing food. Great service, very recommended.

Messaged sherri from the mistley thorn Saturday night to see what time she could do breakfast Sunday morning as we were 6 cyclist from Felixstowe and would be arriving around 8am, we knew the thorn opens at 8-30am but sheeri said no problem someone would be there 8am for us and they were, the breakfast is up there with the best breakfasts I've ever had, we all went for the full English with poached eggs, quality produce in the bacon and sausages at £9.95 worth every penny with unlimited toast. Thanks again sheeri and the mistley thorn team.

Just had lunch at the Thorn. Been a few times and it never disappoints. Excellent food. Today I had the bream with fennel and it was gorgeous. Looking forward to next time.

User

Good food, good service and friendly atmosphere.

User

Fabulous

Really lovely meal and good service

User

Bloody Brilliant!

Stayed in room 10 which is in the annex, a huge room with fabulous bed. The annex is about 50 feet down the road so no problem plus it's above their shop so quiet. We did the dinner bed and breakfast deal which at £190 for 2 persons I thought was very good value. The staff were mega friendly and service excellent. I will definitely be going again.

User

Amazing food and lovely atmosphere. This was our first visit but certainly won’t be our last.

User

Good hotel with friendly staff, comfortable and clean rooms and good selection of food. Only criticism would be that I would have appreciated the bar being open a bit later than 10pm on a Sunday evening. I would have liked to relax a bit more after a stressful journey to get there, but everyone seemed in a rush to get home.

User

Food ok staff nice met up with a couple off friends had two little ones with us although we asked for children’s menu we wasn’t offered high chairs had to ask if they had any two much pepper on fish for the little ones and my friends baby didn’t eat anything as chips to salty no cutlery given for them but not problem as only ate the chips with fingers personally I would take Little ones there myself. But would try it again

Did one of my roadtrips (100 Miles) to try out the Good food guides recommendation.

On arrival parking was a bit of a challenge but sorted.

Arrived in the bar to find staff chatting in the kitchen, after a few minutes someone noticed me and came to serve me.

I was shown t9 a bar area table rather than the restaurant and needed a cushion in my back because of a weirdly positioned piece of wood. Not offered any water.

Ordered my food from the a la Carte menu. Slightly surprised how long the cold smoked salmon dish took to arrive although the mayonnaise/dressing was superb. The salmon itself was a nice quality and good sized portion, in the meantime I was offered a very heavy sourdough (brown/rye) with a slightly unexciting Virgin olive oil.

After the starter I went to check out the toilets, which were a tiny bit aromatic, (but it as a hot day) when I came back I found my main course already sitting on the table cooling! It was a selection of three small pieces of grilled fish, one shrimp and an industrial sized portion of what I can only describe as a version of bubble and qpsqueak. There was a tomato side order too, which was diced and a bit too tart for me, unsure why.

The dessert was unquestionably the highlight a crushed raspberry semifreddo.

Service was, once the food came extraordinarily rapid and plates disappeared within a strikingly short time of cutlery being placed down.

Someone behind the bar appeared to be trying to gpcreate some percussive musical event with bottles and glasses which was very loud and distracting.

The place itself it clearly very popular and was, on a Friday lunchtime quite busy, but was it worth the 100+ mile round trip, not really, although the dessert was superb!
