The Myton Hospices

About The Myton Hospices

Enhancing lives, empowering people. . .

At Myton we believe that everyone matters for every single moment of their life and that treating patients with dignity and respect is more important than meeting targets.

The Myton Hospices Description

In 1979 the Bishop of Coventry set up a committee to discuss the possibility of opening a hospice for people in need of special care in the Warwickshire and Coventry areas. An appeal for money was launched. Funding came from many sources, as it does now, including Rotarians, Lions, Round Tables, and various other charitable organisations and many individuals.

Myton Hamlet, then a disused children’s home, was purchased from Warwickshire County Council. Architects and builders came in to convert the building into a hospice. An act of faith was required to buy the place, and carry out the alterations, without all of the money required to cover the costs, but by the time the hospice was ready to open enough money had been raised to pay for everything!

The Duchess of Kent formally opened the Hospice and planted a tree, in September 1982. The Day Hospice in Warwick opened two years later. In 1998 our purpose built in-patient unit was opened, and was followed by a new day hospice a year later.

In 2002 the people of Rugby raised £1million to build the Rugby Myton Day Hospice which provides day care to the people of Rugby and the surrounding area. The final link in the Myton chain is the Coventry Myton Hospice, with an in-patient unit and a day hospice, which opened in 2009 after a £7million fundraising appeal.

“We all hope it will never be us that has to have a loved one taken into a hospice but if it is, my goodness the care is special. I was able to sleep by my husband’s side from when he was taken in and the children and family were free to come and go as they please. They are just unreal.”
These are the words of I am Holly Matthews whose husband, Ross, was diagnosed with grade-4 Brain cancer in 2014.
The next few years of their life included several brain surgeries, chemother...apy and radiotherapy, and most importantly spending quality time together as a family with their two daughters, Brooke and Texas.
Watch Holly’s full video online today where she speaks openly and bravely about how Myton helped the whole family and how by supporting The Butterfly Effect you will help Myton to continue to be there for families like Ross’ when they need us most, now and in the future...

Karen, has been spending time with Myton’s Art Therapist, Gwen Lowe, making hand casts with her family.
After being given a terminal diagnosis, Karen chose to make castings where she was holding hands with each of her family members, so they will each have a... one of a kind, cast to keep forever.

Please join us in saying a huge thank you to the wonderful Claire who recently completed the Brighton Run2Music Half Marathon in memory of her Grandad, Peter who was cared for at Myton.
We wanted to share this heart-warming story from Claire about Peter that will be sure to put a little smile on your face…
“Those who were lucky enough to meet my Grandad will know how special he was, I struggle to put it into words - he was a true gentleman.
... I remember as a child following his footsteps as we walked up mountains and trying to make fire with my glasses! He was a strong, fit man, always setting a new challenge and planning the next adventure.
I used to love his slideshows, the whole process was magical and he had such interesting stories to tell. He was very poorly but decided to do one last slideshow, a photo of my Grandma in hot pants popped up and we all laughed so much”
Thank you so much for your support and congratulations on completing such a great challenge Claire!

... The sessions take place between 10am and midday on the second Monday of every month at Rugby Day Hospice. You can chat to experienced staff and volunteers, and meet people that might be in a similar position. You’re also welcome to bring the person you care for with you.
Upcoming sessions are taking place on 8th July and 12th August.
The sessions are free to attend, and people are welcome to drop in. Booking isn’t necessary. For more information call the hospice on 01788 550085.

Everyone has a different motivation for becoming a volunteer and this #VolunteersWeek we wanted to share Katy’s inspiring story of how she progressed from volunteer to shop manager!
Katy joined Myton as retail volunteer in December. She had taken some time off work after losing her sister to cancer earlier in the year and decided that volunteering for a local charity would give her something to do and build up her confidence in a work environment.
“You get to meet so many pe...ople, and quite often people who have experienced Myton first hand; whether you’re a volunteer or a member of staff in a Myton shop, you are reminded everyday why you’re there doing that job, raising the money. It’s very inspiring.”
Read Katy’s story online and find out how you could make a difference today…

To celebrate #VolunteersWeek we want to introduce you to the wonderful Brian who has been retired for 17 years and was searching for a way to give back to Myton after his wife, Monica died.
Brian has been a Tin Collector for 5 years now, since he had an enjoyable conversation with Claire McDowell , Community Fundraiser.
“Monica was here for 3 weeks, felt at home and wanted to pass away in Myton overlooking the woods. So I wanted to give something back. I find it very cathart...ic and peaceful coming back. The reception staff, and nurses still welcome me here, so it has become a social network. I enjoy socialising when collecting the tins, and knowing I am helping collect funds for Myton.”
Thank you so much to Brian and all of our amazing volunteers! You are all truly incredible ❤️❤️❤️❤️
