On this day in 1923, a riot following controversy around a Dadaist play called The Gas Heart became the starting point for the foundation of Surrealism. So in honour of the day, we want to highly recommend our personal favourite Surrealist (which is an important favourite thing to have, definitely).
Leonora Carrington is by a lot of people only known as Max Ernest’s lover, but was an incredible artist and writer in her own right. Her art, as her writing, is whimsical, disturbing, and gorgeously haunting, and we promise it’s unlike anything else you’ve seen. Come on by the shop and we’d be more than happy to share some more fun Carrington facts, and our (many) favourite Carrington books. We promise they’ll weird you out in the very best of ways! 🌀

Be still my lightning bolt-shaped heart! ⚡️The gorgeous 20th anniversary edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is finally with us! Which Hogwarts house are you? (Personally, we’re a whole lotta Hufflepuff) 💛💚❤️💙

Summer is finally truly here, folks! Our assistant manager is currently off in Sweden on holiday and have, obviously, chosen the most approprate read for the occasion. What’s your favourite holiday reads? Be sure to leave your favourites down below in the comments! ☀️

Our collection of Barnes & Nobles leatherbound classics is a constant favourite both with our visitors and our staff. Just look how gorgeous this latest addition to the family is! 💘
What classic would you want to see join our leatherbound beauties next? (Personally I’m dying for a silver edged edition of Frankenstein, but that’s just me)

Fridays for us means it’s time for the weekly supply run, or, as it’s better known in this shop, ”a good excuse to swing by Portobello Market on the way back”. Please grant us the strength we need to not leave here with 45 different pastries and plants (again)! 🍰🌷

The wedding bells are ringing and we’ve prepared with all the literature we need to get ready for the big day. Swing by the shop today for a good book and strong opinions on everyone’s outfits! #royalwedding 💍👑

On this day in 1860, J.M Barrie, better known as the author of Peter Pan, was born. Apart from creating one of our most beloved children’s stories, Barrie was generally quite a strange fellow. He, among other things, started a failing cricket team featuring the authors of Sherlock Holmes and Winnie the Pooh, and allegedly ate brussel sprouts every day simply because he liked saying the word.

It’s new window display day at the shop! Our new window is comprised of some of our personal favourites. Any good reads we’ve missed out on? Tell us below what’s your favourite book (has to be in print) and write a few brief sentences about it. Every couple of weeks we’ll pick a winner who’ll have their book and recommendation featured in our window! 📚✨

London’s drenched in sun, and nothing goes better with good weather than a good book, as we all know.
We’ve now got SIGNED copies of The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock in the shop - an intelligent and exciting historical adventure that would make the perfect companion for a hot summer’s day in the park! The signed copies are incredibly limited, though, so come pick yours up fast before they go! ☀️
