The Official Shelley Theatre Description

The Theatre is a Victorian Grade 2 listed building, which we are in the process of renovating. When you first step into the Theatre, you might just see the exposed brickwork where the plaster has come off the walls, or you might look deeper and see the magic within the place, the incredible character of the building and the history.

Carmen and the Gypsies live a bohemian life, seeking freedom outside of the law. José, drawn to Carmen and this unconventional world, is torn between love, duty and honour. Micaëla, innocent and pious, represents a simpler way of life and the charismatic bullfighter Escamillo soon becomes a rival for Carmen’s affections. Set against some of the most recognisable music in opera, this drama is a serious and still-relevant examination of violence, obsession and the struggle of a... complex and spirited woman striving for independence and choice in life and love.
Rogue Opera’s fully staged production is sung in French with English surtitles. With the audience close enough to see blood, sweat and tears and to feel the vibration of every note, Bizet’s thrilling and captivating music is raw, powerful and intimate. Our talented cast and creative team are all professionals with backgrounds including Longborough Festival Opera, Royal Opera House Chorus, English National Opera Chorus, Glyndebourne Festival Chorus and all perform regularly as soloists throughout the UK and Europe.

Following James Hurn’s sell-out 2018 tour, he is back by popular demand with his stunning one-man, many voices, show, celebrating over 60 years of Hancock’s Half Hour. On this, his second visit, James – an actor and impressionist – will be performing a brand-new programme including one classic episode of Hancock’s half hour, and two brand new episodes he has written himself in the same style as Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, with James voicing the entire cast. James is a maste...r at recreating the accents and personas of such iconic 20th century British favourites as Tony Hancock, Sidney James, Hattie Jacques, Bill Kerr and Kenneth Williams. The new show is performed in the style of a radio performance in front of a live audience, bringing to life the classic days of radio comedy. Don’t miss it!
“To me, no praise is too high for James Hurn. His technical skill is astounding. If anyone is out there wondering, does it work, one man doing the whole cast? Is it like the real thing? The answers are yes and yes. Go and see him while you can.” - Tom Dommett, the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society.
“Utterly masterful and quite, quite superb” - Jon Culshaw, Impressionist
“You have Tony Hancock’s pitch and tone so much better than I” - Kevin McNally, Actor
"A breath-taking feat... No one could accuse James Hurn of being less than excellent in his attention to vocal detail" - Daily Echo

Tomorrow we have the Oscar Best Picture winner, Green Book. Inspired by a true story, Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation. http://bit.ly/GreenBookBestPictureOscar
