The Old Vic Theatre Description

‘Something extraordinary has happened at The Old Vic’
Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph

The Old Vic is London’s independent not-for-profit theatre, a world leader in creativity and entertainment.

Today, Artistic Director Matthew Warchus is building on 200 years of creative adventure, with The Old Vic recently being hailed as ‘London’s most eclectic and frequently electrifying theatre’.

The Old Vic is mercurial: it can transform into a theatre in the round, a space for music and comedy, has played host to opera, dance, cinema, music hall, classical dramas, variety, clowns, big spectacles and novelty acts. It was the original home of the English National Opera, the Sadler’s Wells dance company and the National Theatre. It’s also been a tavern, a college, a coffee house, a lecture hall and a meeting place.

All of this is now in the bones of the building and is as important a part of its open-armed, inclusive, welcoming personality as its grand historic decor and the iconic performances and famous productions it has housed.

We hope to be a surprising, unpredictable, ground-breaking, rule-breaking, independent beacon of accessible, uplifting and unintimidating art.

We hold the belief that theatre needs to be supported, shared and upheld for as many people as possible. Our 1000 seats are yours from £10 a ticket. Our productions are diverse, adventurous, new, epic, exciting. Our education and talent programmes allow students to explore and artists of tomorrow to create. Our building is open and alive day and night. Our theatre is yours.

So, whether you’re looking for a comedy or new musical, a dramatic work or dance performance, a £10 preview, a late-night pint or a show you can watch together as a family. There is always something new to entertain at The Old Vic.

‘A Christmas Carol’ (27 Nov) was marvellous - traditional, yet innovative. The use of the small and sparse performing area was clever, as was the use of other parts of the auditorium. Our seats were designated as ‘stage’, and we were a little concerned that it might have meant we’d be looking at actor’s backs, but that was far from the case. Some of the storyline was changed, but it didn’t affect the impact of the drama. My only (very minor) complaint was that the (sound technician’s?) window at the far end was illuminated and visible, and in dark scenes was a little distracting for audience members facing towards it. Rhys Ifans was just brilliant, and he made a perfectly believable Scrooge, while the supporting cast was excellent. Staff were friendly, helpful and polite. All told, it was a wonderful pre-Christmas night. Thank you.

What a beautiful old with modern twist theatre, first time here & what a great show Sylvia. Superb acting & singing plus a great story to remind us how far us women have come!!!

User

Watched yesterday’s show “the lorax” and was absolutely amazed!! At the end of the performance I was moved to tears! Wonderful! Beautiful theatre, amazing actors! Thank you so much to the whole team for making this absolutely stunning show possible! This was one of the best shows I have seen in London! Carry on like this!!

I am not someone to watch shows more than once, but to this one I would go again and again!!!

User

This is the best version we have ever seen and we have seen a Christmas Carol many many times. Excellent performances all round

This is a review about the people rather than the place. The security team in particular. Yesterday evening my son found himself in London, drunk, upset, lost and alone. Looking for a train station to head home to Lancashire he came across the theatre. Ibrahim Hadjimuradov and his colleagues took him in and took care of him when it was most needed, charged his phone, gave him water and contacted me to tell me he was safe. Ibrahim and his mother gave him a bed for the night and took him to Euston this morning so that he could make his way back home to his family. I cannot thank you enough. Today I could be telling a much different story if the security team at the Old Vic Theatre had not found it in their hearts to look after my son, in his emotional incoherent state it would have been easy to turn him away. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Such a wonderful production of the classic Dickens novel. Go and see it if you can get tickets. Not for young kids, it will Surprise you to the very last. Rhys Ifans you legend no spoilers, it’s fabulous. The theatre looking great too. Warm, friendly staff, who work so hard. I will be back soon.

Spent an evening at The Old Vic for Sea Wall, joint with the later Q and A. An astounding performance from Andrew, as captivating as ever. Truly enjoy everything he does. Simon is a spectacular playwright—his works are some of the best naturalist plays I've had the chance to read—he couldn't have chosen a better person to play Alex.

Q and A was well run, giving more depth to the play and the reasoning behind it, as well as some insight to the theatre on the first half.

Happy 200 years to The Old Vic, and thank you for making the visitation as inviting as possible for all the guests; organisation was brilliant, the theatre space was immense in its beauty, extremely intimate with the audience, and I can't wait to travel back for another show sometime in the future.

SYLVIA

Having just seen the preview night of Sylvia this has to be a must watch for anyone that has the opportunity to get tickets. You don’t even have to know the story of the suffragettes because it’s played out so fantastically in music by what I can only say are one of the most energetic and enthused casts I’ve seen in a long time. The choreography was amazing and there was some seriously raw talent on display tonight.

Would I see this show again if I had chance absolutely! Would I see the show if it toured and came to Wiltshire? You bet I would!

Thanks to all involved in what has been a difficult and complex first week you truly were amazing!

One of the best performances I have seen in years! Not just Rhis Ifans-who was absolutely stunning as Ebenezer - but the whole cast offered us a magnificent experience which we will remember for years!! Wonderful set ups and brilliant voices!

User

On holiday in London for the first time... one thing was for sure, I was going to catch a play At The Old Vic! Just got back to my hotel from watching A Monster Calls! Absolutely brilliant! The actors, the production... everything about it Blow Me Away! Bravo to the cast and crew! What a great first impression of The Old Vic!

User

Just seen Fanny and Alexander. An amazing production and I can't understand why this isn't sold out every night. If you are considering it but are put off by the length of it, don't be. It flies by. Wonderful performances by all the cast. Penelope Wilton as brilliant as you would expect. However, Alexander was outstanding. Unfortunately not able to identify which young actor played the part (24th March) but he was incredible. Oh yes, and the theatre itself is quite pretty too! Do not miss this...

User

Interesting experience last night. Preview for Sylvia cancelled and replaced with a dress rehearsal that we were invited to stay for (in addition to getting a refund). It was exceptional. If that's the dress rehearsal, the finished show will be a huge hit! P.s. I hope 'Sylvia' is OK this morning. Xx

Having been going to the theatre since I was about ten years old, I can honestly say that I have never seen a better production than "Girl From The North Country". Powerful, moving, funny, amazing acting, all to a brilliant interpretation of Dylan's music.

Shirley Henderson's portrayal of a woman living with dementia surely deserves a best actress award. In fact, there is probably not a better actress gracing our stages at the moment.

There is only one more week of this run to go at The Old Vic. But if you can get a ticket. You won't be sorry.

User

Happy Birthday you marvellous old queen. You don't look a day over two centuries. For fifteen years I've been enjoying your work. Long may it continue.

User

Great theatre

User

Girl from the North Country is a new work, a play about the struggles of americans living through the depression interwoven with beautiful arrangements of Bob Dylan songs. It is an ensemble piece with outstanding performances from the whole cast and the music enhances the meaning with its deep lyrics. The singing was wonderful and I found Shirley Henderson's performance hypnotic. She must be exhausted by the end of a show, and two shows in a day is quite a feat.

We loved every minute

User

Absolutely amazing - we laughed and we cried, such fun too towards the end, go if you can you’ll love it. The cast were brilliant- what a treat in a wonderful old theatre, the best setting possible.

User

A monster calls was amazing!

User

What an incredible play I saw this afternoon. I had read very little on the original Fanny & Alexander but found this truly captivating throughout its 3 hour. All of the cast truly giving stellar performances and at times both goosebumps and tears. The children were truly amazing with special credit due to Alexander at the end of act one.

Penelope truly aiding some comic timing and lines but this is truly an ensemble piece. Every one is flawless with some clever effects throughout alongside a lighting and set design simple but effective.

A dark look on life but with hints of humour, this is truly about morality, life, death, domestic violence, family bonds, friendship and so much more.

Well done for an exhilarating performance on my.first EVER visit to the Old Vic.
