Won a competition on Minster fm for a 3 course meal, over night stay and breakfast! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would of been happy paying for it! Lovely food and a beautiful pub! Waitresses were very good!! Highly recommend

User

Visited the Owl twice recently visiting friends in the area first time we had a meal and second we also stopped over had the korean chicken burger both times as was so impressed the first time, now not normally over kean on burgers however this is not your normal run of the mill cheap tacky burger this is pure chicken in a very nice batter with a taste to die for and not small on size which is always a good point. The beer lines must be cleaned very regular or replaced on referb as having worked in the trade previously i know a good pint when i drink one and the warsteiner is certainly a good pint as was the other beers we had which were all very clean and crisp. The hotel room we stopped in was very clean and comfortable you also got bottles of water the side of your bed for free and hot chocolate plus your normal tea and coffee. The breakfast was very nice which included continital and full English and alot better compared to other places close by where we have stopped all in all if back in area we try to book a room at the Owl first. I normally complain so starting my new years resolution yearly to give credit when credit is due so would like to thank all the lovely staff we meet for making our two visits a very joyable time.

User

Thank you for everything you did to help me and charlotte Coupland celebrate our wedding yesterday the venue was amazing and the staff so helpfull especially Ashley who worked so had to make it run smoothly

User

Saw the recent post about breakfast, so decided to come in today to try it. What can I say? Lovely breakfast ( I went for the fat lad portion) with plenty of choice for both cooked and continental. Tremendous value for money and nice, friendly service from Molly.

User

Over the years we have chosen the Owl to host many of our family celebrations and have always had excellent service and first class food. Yesterday was no exception when we celebrated the wedding of Paul and Charlotte Coupland...a really happy day in beautiful surroundings....thank you to all the staff for your hard work.

User

Not been to the Owl for years, had a bad meal once and never went back. Can honestly say what a pleasant surprise. The food was excellent and the service was first class.

We have now somewhere else on our list of eateries.

Would highly recommend, Brilliant 🎉

User

Just had a lovely meal. My steak was cooked to perfection just how i like it (well done). Husband enjoyed his korean fried bbq chicken burger. Lovely friendly staff and atmosphere. Nice to receive a discount for working for the NHS. Nice to see a dog friendly room. We will be back.

User

A hidden gem ! Stayed with hubby and 2 children. Room was an excellent size (compared to the box we had previously stayed at in York) it was very clean and beds really comfy.

Staff were excellent and went out of their to make us welcome even with a lively toddler as part of our ‘party’ - thanks to Harry, Ryan and the ‘2 Blonde bombshells’ behind the bar. Food was good the evening menu varied and the breakfast delicious. If we had to say one negative feedback would be to make the kids meal package to include a drink and dessert (but that’s all we can think of!)

Would go back without hesitation

User

My wife and I are here for a short weekend break celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. Using as a base for popping into historic York. Room is great, serving its purpose. Evening meal in the bar was good. Eggs Benedict for breakfast is top drawer. Staff are very courteous, helpful and all done with a smile. Deffo visit again... well done all

User

Went yesterday evening for a meal and a few drinks stared with figs on toast followed by a steak all excellent the only problem was through out the meal there where children running around the table and jumping off the wall behind us the parents seemed totally oblivious to the noise and continued to carry on with there own conversation so instead of relaxing and having a few drinks after the meal we phoned for a taxi and left

User

Visited last Friday night after booking in. Can’t fault the food - when it finally arrived, it was even better than it used to be before the take over. However waiting just shy of an hour after ordering is disgraceful. Others were approaching waiters with same issue. Definitely a good ploy to drive up your bar sales..! Staff didn’t even apologise for delay or give any indication that food would be delayed.

Also despite booking and quoting 50% Off deal, this was never mentioned during the visit.

Menu is extremely thinned down too! No where near as much choice.

Used to love it here but wouldn’t rush to return. However as said, the food that did come was delicious and couldn’t fault that at all.

Not very impressed though and even less impressed by staff.

Made a reservation for a family of 4 for 5pm, I was informed that the Sunday roast may be limited and there was no guarantee that they would be enough roast beef left. On arrival we were all looking forward to a Sunday roast, we orderd drinks then the waitress came and told me that the drink I had ordered had run out, when it came to order our meals we then was informed that the roast dinners had two of the main vegetables run out along with the roast beef which was a disappointing. I then ended up choosing the mixed grill then I was informed by the waitress that they had run out of the mix grill, I just couldn't belive what I was hearing. I then chose the sea bass with boiled potatoes, the waitress then came back and told me that they had no boiled potatoes left, and would i have mash potatoes instead. At this point the whole experience was so disappointing I will not be going back. How hard is it to make more and order more ingredients in to cater for customers. This was a normal Sunday not to busy no long bank holiday there is no excuse.

User

I've been to the refurbished Owl as few times but the tables are never clean...weather you go for a morning coffee or in the evening for a drink with friends ...they have been sticky to the touch...plus you can see all the glass rings ....which again are sticky to the touch...to me this is a basic thing to get right...

User

The last few times we’ve visited we’ve been really disappointed, I’m not sure what’s changed but service has gone incredibly slow and food quality hasn’t been great at all. We always come early as we have 2 small children with low patience yet even before busy times we have been left waiting well over an hour for food, chips have been well over cooked, almost like they’ve been refried several times. We thought we would give the owl the benefit of the doubt but unfortunately it’s put us off that this has happened repeatedly. Please sort it out as we always loved coming before but won’t be returning until things change

User

Really disappointed. We had 50 people come along to the party night. The parma ham brushetta was actually carved thick ham on a piece of dry bread with a slice of tomato and masses of dry rocket. We didn't get our main courses til about 50 mins later when it was almost 10pm and most people were past it then. The manager did compensate us with wine which was appreciated but feel the whole thing was a bit of a shambles. We booked after having such a good time last year but unfortunately we will be looking somewhere else next year.

User

I booked a table for Sunday lunch ....3 adults & two small children .

The service was excellent & even though we arrived 1/2 hour early they accommodated us which was brilliant .

The 3 adults ordered the Sunday lunch . This is where it started to go wrong !! Presentation of the meal was good however the meat was awful . The beef could not be chewed it was that tough , the pork was just portions of pure fat. Veg was raw .

We also ordered 2 kids meals ... sausage & mash & a burger & fries . The sausages & burger were burnt to the point our 2 year old nearly choked on a piece of sausage .

I asked to speak to a manager who took 10 mins to come to our table . When she did arrive I showed her the food left on our plates & asked her how it could leave the kitchen . She apologised & said that we didn't have to pay for it as she agreed that it shouldn't have left the kitchen .

I told her that we would not be returning to the Owl under any circumstance .

User

Family went in a couple of days ago for a Sunday lunch, the service was okay but when its food you go in for. Food is what you expect to be enjoying. The food was cold and felt like had been out from the oven for a while, mash potato was lumpy, carrots and parsnips were naff. Grandparents had the beef which was chewy and cold too. Wouldn't recommend eating there.

User

EXTREMELY RUDE STAFF!!!

I'm not really one for writing reviews but I was so annoyed after my visit here I feel I have to.

We were seated by a lovely young lady who also took our food orders, no problems there. However she did not bring our meals to us, instead we had the rudest man serve us. I am a very fussy eater (I know this is a pain for people but at the end of the day it's the customers wishes) I had asked for no veg with my meal, it came wish mashed up veg which was then all over the rest of my food. When I said I had asked for no veg he was very rude and said 'but then you wouldn't have much on your plate" yes I know this but that's what I asked for, I specifically said the foods I would like. When I said but that's what I asked for he said "well the chef is being a chef, sorry" (in a very sarcastic tone).

The food was below average and for the price of the meals it was very disappointing!! We spent alot of money in this place with everyone's meals and not one of us enjoyed it and unfortunately that one rude staff member spoils the hard work of the others!

User

Booked in advance for an event. Ordered for 80 people, received 80 half sandwiches and a few chips. Wouldn't provide more meals for my group. People left starving.

Been waiting days for a response from the general manager as the event "manager" can't seem to deal with my dispute.

Asked for a receipt - still not got.

To be fair if you walk in - not a bad place but events are apauling. No one there to manage my event on the day.
