The Oyster Shack Bigbury Description
The Oyster Shack - never has a name represented a place so literally. We're a seafood restaurant serving Devon's finest seafood from oysters to lobster to lemon sole and everything in between in a relaxed, friendly and fun atmosphere.
Established in 1989, the original ethos of The Oyster Shack was to "keep it simple", and this is an ethos which we uphold to this very day; the best local seafood, excellently cooked and served simply. Indeed if you order one of our Salcombe crabs, we cook it and crack it, but make you do all of the work! Our customers wouldn't have it any other way. Having said that we've come a long way since the days of old, so here’s a quick potted history.
Back in the late eighties, The Oyster Shack was quite a different beast altogether – merely a Shack in its most basic sense. It was actually an oyster farm, filled inside by row upon row of oyster purification tanks. Here, the oyster would be processed, after maturing in the River Avon, purified under ultra-violet lights until they were fit for consumption. Oyster lovers would arrive and buy their oysters, bringing with them a DIY lunch, shucking their oysters themselves accompanied by some crusty bread & a bottle of wine to two! Many would pitch up with their own deckchairs and wile away an afternoon in the blissful peace and quiet of the Avon valley. Before long, an enterprising local man saw an opportunity not to be missed – turning the place into a restaurant, and the rest is history, so they say!
We have until recently, remained a hidden gem in the West Country, but our hard work and high standards have been recognised, and through recommendation by customers and food critics, we have been rewarded as a member of the Top 100 Restaurants in the UK, as well as being Commended in the Michelin Guide and the Harden’s Guide, both well respected food directories. We have also appeared in the national press, and the media continue to be intrigued by our unique appeal.

A bit expensive but that's what you get for top quality local fresh food.
What an excellent spot in a beautiful part of the world. The prosecco chilled and bubbly. The crab soup and fresh oysters bringing the taste of the sea to your tongue! Scrumptious scallops, deliciously barbecued prawns, tantalising sorbets and surrounded by smiles from staff and patrons alike. A fantastic experience on a gorgeous bank holiday weekend.
What a fantastic place! Second visit for us whilst visiting our son & his family. Celebrating my birthday we enjoyed crab soup, mussels, pint of prawns, a (huge) whole crab, roasted cod and lobster thermidor. Wonderful welcome, especially for our grandson, and quality, service (Jane) & value in equal measure. Fabulous, thanks guys! On top of that we enjoyed a beautiful crab, mac & cheese from the take away menu when we got home :)

We went for lunch on Bank Holiday Monday - 28th May. A party of 8 and 2 dogs, the atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were brilliant and friendly. We tried many things that were new to some of us, Spider Crab, Scallops and cooked oysters, and all of it was excellent !! I highly recommend this restaurant to everybody, they even had a separate menu for dogs, (although they couldn't get past the doggie ice cream) !!
We came upon this restaurant as we were exploring Devon... what a delight! Wonderful food, funky ambience, friendly service and we loved the fact you made dinners for dogs too! She thoroughly enjoyed her chicken, veg and flaxseeds ���
The menu is full of so much delicious seafood it is hard to choose!! I opted for BBQ sardines and chilled lobster with a side of greens and my husband had the BBQ scallops and mussels with a side of skinny fries. Both were simply scrumptious! Super friendly service too. Great atmosphere. We came here last year and we're super excited to be back for another visit. One not to be missed on the holiday agenda. 😋💓👏

My idea of heaven ! Relaxed dining but excellent quality food !!! A real quirky little place with amazing service !!! I didn't catch our waiters name ( said he lived in Plymouth ) but his service was excellent !! He engaged with our 9 year old some and made very good recommendations ! All of our food was amazing , we tried oysters for the first time which were delicious and my crab and my husbands sole was just delish ! Drinks I thought were very reasonably priced to !!! We will be back next year without a doubt , a shame we live 3 hours away or we would be there every weekend !! Thank you !
Lovely hidden gem. The fish is superb and fresh. Love the way the chalk board says how many fish there are and they get crossed off. The Oysters are of course delicious.
I went here for the shellfish cookery course and it was excellent. Incredible value for money. £85 and we learnt how to cook and then prepare a lobster, dress a crab and shuck oysters and scallops. We took home our crab and lobster, we ate the scallops and oysters there! It also included a 2 course lunch, which was delicious. Very relaxed atmosphere and informative. Will definitely be going back for the fish cooking course. Thank you.
Hats off to the Chefs Dan & Allen. As an American in a foreign country food is quite different. Found this gem with amazing food! We had fresh beet salad, Fresh undressed crab, Fresh Moulton fish, fresh bbq mackerel (delishish), we had a bottle of Wine, 2 other adult beverages and desert.. A freshly made Pineapple Pan-acota with slivers of fresh coconut.. It was the best meal I have ever had in my 4 trips to England..

Best sea food I have ever tasted! Amazing service and lovely young lady who run the bar waitresses and too the payments!! I have eaten sea food all over Devon and Cornwall and this is the best I have ever tasted! Service was lovely and quick the food fresh and top quality! If u like seafood then don't miss out! Love setting and the salcome gin is lovely! Thanks u all hopefully see u all soon!
