Every pub sells mostly the same beer/spirits etc, with this pub it's all about the interior. Multiple 'rooms' of hand carved wooden decadence fill this place, roaring fires in winter, and the most ornate gents toilets in great Britain make this an essential place to call in if you are in Liverpool, even if it's just for a coke. Amazing place! You will never have been in a pub like this before.

Good selection of beers. Ornately panelled rooms including cosies with armchairs. Good food served in a panelled room with chandeliers and some leather armchairs for relaxing after meal. For the gents, the toilets are worth a visit just to see the old ornate urinals and vanity units.

Now part of the Nicholsons chain, so food and drinks tend towards the safe and predictable pub "classics" which is all fine and good. But the experience of the Philharmonic is the reason for visiting. Both exterior and interior justify its Grade 2* listing as being of "more than special interest". The interior is unchanged and especially beautiful with plaster, mahogany, copper and glass detail around musical themes reflecting the nearby concert hall. Well worth seeking out.

It was our second time in Liverpool, both times as a birthday treat for my youngest son who loves Liverpool. This time though he has become of age, so we decided to take him to a pub for a beer and we followed Lonely Planet's advice. We went on a Friday night and I must say we were very pleased with our choice, the pub itself is very grand but at the same time warm and welcoming. I couldn't go and check the famous gents for myself, so my sons took a couple of pictures for me :-) We only exchanged a few words with the staff, but they were nice, a little surprised at my request of a "lemon and lime" (as I don't drink alcohol), but managed just the thing for me. We sat in the big room and made ourselves cozy and warm for just under an hour or so. Will definately come back on our next trip to Liverpool (there's going to be many "next times", if my son's dream of coming and live in Liverpool becomes true ...) Silvana from Milan, Italy

Got in just after 12 on a Saturday Lunch so beat the rush for good seats. Visually great historic pub with Lots of traditional featured. Food reasonably priced, came quick and tasted fresh. Perfect if your next venue is the everyman theatre. Well worth a popping in, but make sure the men check out the toilet..!!

Fantastic pub. Great place to stop for lunch or just take photos. It is located near to Liverpool's wonderful cathedrals. The decor is breathtaking. The food is highly recommended.

Hadn't been in since it was refurbed and new decor was a nice surprise. Staff were always friendly, smart and professional. Food was a treat and served in good time. We would have preferred more variety on the menu hence four stars. There's a lot of competition in Liverpool with some very good eateries; the Phil still holds it place.

Love this place, a really relaxed warm place to go for a drink. They have rotational guest ales and brilliant interiors (the gent toilets being the highlight, the girls are just normal sorry), the building is grade 2 listed. If you are a tourist it is a good place to get a feel for an old fashioned pub. Two minutes to the Everyman theatre and Philharmonic Hall so perfect for a pre-theatre drink (Also drinking well of the Beatles and in between Liverpool's two famous Cathedrals). Only pitfall is there are no prices on any of the drinks (and the staff sometimes don't know either) and a few extra chairs wouldn't go a miss.

Wasn't expected what I saw when I walked in. Incredible pub with great decor and ambience. Great choice of real ales. Cool place.
