About The Pied Bull Chester

The Pied Bull is situated within the walls of the historic Roman City of Chester. Reputed to be the oldest licensed house in Chester. The pub dates from 1155 and today the interior reflects its distinctive heritage.

The Pied Bull Chester Description

Dating back to the 11th Century and once a coaching inn. The Pied Bull is the oldest continuously licensed premises in Chester. It has a colourful history and its fair share of ghosts. The cellar is haunted by the ghost of a cellar man from 1609 and two guest rooms are haunted by a chamber maid from 19th Century. In 1533 it was known as Bull Mansion, and a coach and four started to run from here to Birkenhead in 1784. Today it's an oak-beamed town centre pub with rooms. We offer great value food and clean, comfortable and competitively priced accommodation. A potted history of the pub taken from George Borrows' 'Wild Wales' is written on a blackboard in the restaurant.

We were voted Chester CAMRA pub of the year 2011 & have been nominated for 2012.

The Pied Bull's microbrewery reopened in April 2011. Historic records show that the Inn had its own brewery right up to the late 19th century.

This is the only working brewery within the walls of Chester, located less than 50 yards from the site of the famous Northgate Brewery.

What a fun bar. Asked for a gin and tonic and the bartender ended up creating me an amazing drink with elderflower Fever Tree tonic and apples. No extra charge. We went back the next day and sat in the courtyard. Great time all around.

User

Superb pub, the food is fantastic, it has history - even a ghost in rooms 8/9 - what a lovely place

User

Stayed there last night. 2nd time. Great time and lovely staff.

Room was a new room so well decorated with high class furnishings.

Only draw back was the noise from the road.

So will be going back however will ask for the cottages just off the beer garden.

User

Staff amazing, room delightful, breakfast perfect. We will definitely be back. Thank you all so very much.

User

Lovely place. I've read some of the other reviews and feel upset 😢. This is the oldest coach house in Chester, if you want to experience staying in a building with such history then you need to accept the quirky characters of it! Loved my stay. Xx

User

Loved it here. The rooms were modern and spotless with a beautiful bathroom and comfortable bed. The staff were really friendly and enjoyed the quirkiness of such an old building. In a great location for the shops etc will definitely be back.

User

User

We stayed for one night in this hotel and had a lovely time. Stayed in room 31. The room was lovely and the staff were very friendly. Would definitely come back.

User

Stayed in the four poster suite with freestanding bath- beautiful room. Staff were lovely and very accommodating. The room must have been adjoining an air con system or something as loud noise sounding like a giant fan echoed through the room all night. The stairs to the bar are absolutely lethal! Lovely piece of history as they are the original stairs from the 1500s, however my boyfriend fell up them a couple of times and I myself fell down them this morning and have really hurt my ankle. Lovely pub but some sort of health and safety needs addressing with them stairs! Massive hazard waiting to happen

User

Staff lovely. Rooms very nice modern clean. Great breakfast. My daughter did nt like the smell on entering the pub think it was the smell of hops as has its own brewery. Would stay again though

Just back from pied bull ,we went for penthouse as it was my sisters bdays , yes we knew there b stairs but nit so tired stairs bathroom , bedrooms were lovely , sister ending up staying with my other sisters bed was no good for her too hard ,so I got both quilts and put in one to make it better, the only thing is we won't b booking penthouse again one cause of constant nonce of students from 2 am to bout 5 , and cleaning lorry then deliverys we got 4 hours sleep both nights I will defo go back but book a room at back of hotel , we stayed in family room number 15, the staff were brill , chambermaids great too food lovely well dun to chef , this am we decided to ave late check out wat cost 15 per room well worth it ,,, and there hair dryer , two tele massive bathroom shower , the complaint I would say is the screaming shouting of students , other was shower glass fell off hit me head did tell the man and far as kno sorted it and full apologise. We left today wed left our class at hotel so could ave walk round also they rang taxi for train home ,, definitely go back but go for lower floor and and at back wat beautiful pub so comfy too see u soon x

User

Nice pub but needs ventilation in the front of the pub and at over £4.30 a pint of Plum porter by far the dearest real pub out of 16 done between Chester and Liverpool. (by a long way too)

User

Back from a visit there last night in room 15! NEVER AGAIN!!

Loved the pub, staff were welcoming and nice and family suite was really nice - we were very impressed, until bedtime!! No sleep all night! Road noise was constant, students were shouting till all hours, an alarm went off for hours and we could literally hear all of this due to no double glazing, which we understand is due to being a listed building! Then at 7am when we had had very limited sleep the awful noise of beer kegs being dropped and delivered! Worst nights sleep We have ever encountered. Was asked by staff if all was ok to which I told them that no all wasn't ok -

They had little interest in my feedback! Word of advice if you want any sleep stay clear of this hotel! It was a nightmare for all 4 of us!!!

User

Described as being dog friendly but when we arrived with our dogs we were told that the first table by the door was the only table you can sit with dogs and if it is taken you have to leave.

So not really dog friendly - which is fine but don’t describe yourself as dog friendly when you aren’t.
