About The Poetry Society

The Poetry Society is one of Britain's most dynamic arts organisations, representing British poetry both nationally and internationally. www. poetrysociety.org. uk

The Poetry Society Description

The Poetry Society was founded in 1909 to 'promote "a more general recognition and appreciation of poetry". Since then, it has grown into one of Britain's most dynamic arts organisations, representing British poetry both nationally and internationally. Today it has more than 4000 members worldwide and publishes the leading poetry magazine, Poetry Review.

With innovative education and commissioning programmes and a packed calendar of performances, readings and competitions, the Poetry Society champions poetry for all ages. As well as the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award, the Poetry Society runs the National Poetry Competition, one of the world's longest-running and most prestigious prizes for an individual poem, and the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry - the prize founded by Carol Ann Duffy from her honorarium as Poet Laureate.

"The Poetry Society is the heart and hands of poetry in the UK - a centre which pours out energy to all parts of the poetry-body, and a dexterous set of operations which arrange and organise poetry's various manifestations. It has a long distinguished history, and has never been so vital, or so vitalizing as it is now. " Sir Andrew Motion

After the roaring success of last year's sell-out gig at The Poetry Café, Henry Normal returns next week on Wednesday 12 September to launch his new collection, This Phantom Breath. Book your ticket now! bit.ly/normalcafe
Henry is co-writer and producer of some of the very biggest hits of British TV and cinema over the past decade and a half. He co-wrote Mrs Merton, The Royle Family and much of Steve Coogan’s early output. He’s produced everything from 24 Hour Party People,... to Red Dwarf, Nighty Night and Philomena. As a stalwart of the 1980's performance poetry scene, regularly performing alongside poets such as John Hegley before taking a long diversion into TV, Henry retired from producing in 2016 to return to his first love - poetry.
Supporting Henry will be Pete Ramskill, Nottingham-based painter / sculptor / designer / poet, reading from his new Flapjack Press collection Selected Moments of Machine Life.
Book your ticket before they sell out at bit.ly/normalcafe

Sounds like a wonderful society. I wrote my 1st book of children's poems when I was in middle school. I use poetry written by others in some of my artwork-I love so much of what others have written which is so much better than mine. I wrote a children's book that rhymes (Wellington: The Cat Who Went Online).

Ode to Horace Mann

Be ashamed to die until you have won some

victory for humanity. – Horace Mann

Be aware that energy is life, save some for your kids.

Be afraid that our minds are bent by news, not books.

Be awed by the healing power of the simple purple cone flower.

Be awake before the bombs drop, before the money rules.

Be agile: live in a town that walks and bikes to work and play.

Be amused by ants and birds, goats and potato fields, lilacs and sycamores.

Be angry only long enough to solve the problem, then move on.

Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.

I have travelled the world twice over, met the famous, saints and sinners, Poets and artists, Kings and queens, old stars and hopeful beginners. I have been where no one has been before, learned the secrets from writers and cooks, all with a library ticket to the wonderful world of books.

Don't just take my word for it. Visit to see and hear for yourself. You'll be moved, you'll re-think and feel why you'd not come sooner. But you have to like poetry as I do.
