About The Roundhay Fox

A traditional, cosy, dog friendly pub next to Roundhay Park, Leeds.

The Roundhay Fox Description

The Roundhay Fox was previously two Italian restaurants, a tea shop and a wine bar known as The Stables. Roundhay Park on the edge of which the inn sits once belonged to the Lacy family in 1284 before becoming a hunting park providing sport and game for the table of the medieval gentry.
A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

We came for lunch after visiting Tropical World and found a nice table by the window for two adults and a child. We ordered our food and it came pretty quickly, staff were polite and friendly. I think we were lucky to order before the lunch time rush as it got quite busy not long after we ordered, but was a nice environment and enjoyed our food (which there was plenty of). Will come back next time we're in the area.

User

Had a lovely dinner outdoors in the garden last week. The food and the service was great, the staff were really lovely, and they're dog friendly. If we lived closer, we'd be back all the time!

User

Great place to have a relaxing meal and a nice drink, the prices are also reasonable, will definitely go again.

User

We booked today for 15:00 after sledging in the park and have visited other pubs within the same chain. The pub was clean and had a lovely country inn atmosphere. It was busy with people who had not booked but we were seated instantly. Although the food was good, the service was slow and we had to request both the desert menu and then to order our desert. The staff seemed to be stretched unfortunately. A couple more team members could really benefit speed of service and therefore the overall experience !

User

Great food, excellent bar service and a superb atmosphere ... just the place to meet up with friends or relations ... the food here has always been exceptional, but it was let down last night (14th July) by the bar service who tried to convince m that the Chicken Caesar Salad didn't have Anchovies in it ... well it blooming well did, big ones too ... it went right back ... fair enough another one quickly followed ... but I would have preferred to have been listened to in the first place ...

User

Went to the Roundhay Fox with three friends for a meal. We have been on lots of occasions and always had fantastic food. The service can be very slow but always friendly. On this occasion however it was a joke! New staff walking round with food with no idea where to take it, shouting what it was they were carrying. Another member of staff shouting at them in the restaurant to stop shouting in the restaurant! Food dropped on the floor! Dirty cutlery dropped on a handbag with no apology! Customers walking round looking for staff asking for the bill! Main course took almost an hour to arrive with no apology! Won't be returning any time soon!

User

The food was good. However there was a 50 minute wait for the food with a further 15 minute wait for the childrenā€™s meals. By this time the adults were mostly finished. There should have been more than one person in the kitchen at the lunch rush. We came for my Grandmas birthday and this really put a downer on the day.

User

Sorry folks. Not a good lunch today at all. Saturday, early-ish for a bite to eat with family as a party of six. The service was prompt but abrupt, asked to move after we had sat on a table that was supposedly reserved without a reserved sign, confused drinks brought over and seriously mediocre expensive food. Little or no thought gone into presentation, very small portions, poor quality ingredients and barely warm. You could learn a lot from Wetherspoons! Won't be back, will not recommend. Ā£90+ spent badly.

User

I've heard great reviews of this place in the past so was happy to try it today.

We were not greeted on entry so found ourselves a table, a staff member appeared & aggressively told us the table was reserved. There was no reservation sign in sight. We were told we could stay only if we left by 1.30pm.

Looking at the menu prices, i expected a high quality meal. I had the vegetarian burger (small portion, no salad & frozen chips), my partner had a lukewarm, poorly presented ham, egg & chips. My son received a burger, which was tiny in a huge bread bun, about 5 chips & overcooked beans. I have honestly had better meals in wetherspoons. I am really disappointed by this experience & have no intention of returning, absolute waste of money.

User

We visited today for a light snack after our trip to Tropical World, it was 2pm and very quiet inside which we thought was great as we had our 1 year old who gets fairly impatient! We walked in and struggled to find a clean table, we eventually went and sat down and cleared a table ourselves. In the raised seating area there was 7 tables all empty but all hadn't been cleaned. We ordered our food at 1.50pm (a pizza and fries) and by 2.30 we realised we had been waiting a while, considering it was dead. We waited a while longer when eventually at 2.45pm my partner decided to go and find out how much longer we would be waiting, he went to the bar where he waited for someone to come for 5 minutes, when the waitress eventually appeared she said she would go check where the food was, she came back and explained that the food should of been bought out already by someone which obviously didn't help us! I decided at this point that we didn't want to wait any longer and got our things together, as I walked towards the bar to leave the food appeared! We got a refund and left, I explained we had been waiting an hour and that the state of the tables was disgusting at this point the staff began cleaning them! We regularly visit The Wyke Lion in Wyke and The Hare and Hounds in Mirfield which are both Vintage Inns and are faultless every time! I can't believe that the Roundhay Fox is part of the same brand! We will definitely not be back!

User

We visited here today after a visit to butterfly world. We booked our table in the morning for 1pm. We arrived and queued at the bar for 20 mins, told the young girl behind the bar we had a reservation, to be told to just go and find somewhere to sit. Not what I expect when I have reserved a table, once we found a table that wasnā€™t covered in dirty plates or glasses, we then had to que for another 20 mins to order our food, we said we would like to place it on a tab, to be told they needed our card to keep, so we went back to the table to get a card, we then had to que for another 20 mins for a different server to tell us we didnā€™t need a card to open a tab!!! The food then took over 1 hour to arrive, no team members around to ask how long it was going to be! When it finally did arrive it was average at best!! Luckily I had my Mitchell and Butlers staff discount code as I would not have paid full price for the service or food that we experienced here, the tables that hadnā€™t been cleared when we arrived, were still dirty when we left! I work in a vintage inns and I would be embarrassed to work here! I understand that staff shortages happen and food can sometimes take a lot of time when busy, but this was not communicated to us when we ordered, extremely disappointed in the whole visit and would certainly not visit again!

User

The lady that served us was great, very polite and helpful. The rest of the staff that assisted were the complete opposite! Second time I have eaten there in 2 weeks and after a bad first experience I thought I would give another go however unfortunately both as bad as each other. How hard it is to cook a chicken breast, it was dry and burnt .Pizza with chilli jam was like jam on toast; prawn cocktail bland. Out of 8 meals served not one was good! Such a shame as great setting and interior atmosphere, just needs an urgent revamp in the Kitchen.

User

Terrible experience - very unwelcoming.

I came here today for food with my 22 month old daughter. There was just 1 man on the bar and 2 other members of staff floating around looking busy doing nothing and trying their best to ignore the queue at the bar.

I had to find my own menu and I was waiting to be served by the man at the bar for such a long time and trying to entertain a hungry toddler at the same time. In the end I decided to leave without ordering and I certainly won't be returning.

I do not recommend this pub to people with young children, they're not made to feel welcome.

User

Please donā€™t go here. Such a shame that a pub/restaurant in a brilliant location and building like this can be so disappointing and infuriating. Needs a drastic change in management, as do its partner pubs in the area from what Iā€™ve heard.

The only free tables hadnā€™t been cleared and were dirty, was massively understaffed, slow service at table and bar, steak was like rubber, even the J20ā€™s which were for kids were served in outrageously big glasses and the requests for the food were ignored and not as told, had run out of some foods which is not the end of the world but dessert was forgotten about and had to go back to the bar to chase it all up... then instead of the chef making it the waitress made it... fab. For the service, food and general experience you get it is outrageously overpriced!

Has great potential but fell flat on its feet and would highly recommend to NOT go here. Only go if you want to be entertained by incompetence.

User

Lovely pub in a great location, however food very disappointing! Steak sandwiches were grisly and liuke warm! Service not great either, dirty tables, dirty plates and glasses left for ages on vacated tables! Never offered any condiments or cutlery so had to go find it myself! Over priced and poor quality food, Wouldnā€™t recommend or return again.

User

Just been in 31 July 2018. Very quiet but was informed by a sarcastic toned barman it was 45 min wait for food. Then when we had decided to order was told ā€˜no ham or cheese leftā€™!

The very basics I would have thought.

I asked the kitchen direct about waiting time on a BLT sandwich.... half hour was the reply!

Poor reviews just keep on coming... Such a shame as lovely looking bar but itā€™s always about the staff in every business and there is a set of monkeys running that atm. The rude barman with the beard is just a joke. wonā€™t be rushing back.

User

Food is very basic for the price, the sandwiches are very poor, very little fillings, service nor great either, good location, but would not recommend it

User

Came for some lunch and wish we hadn't bothered. 2 of us ordered the steak sandwhich. Steak was so chewy we couldn't eat it. Bread was so dry!! Absolutely awful. Nobody came to check we were okay. Waitress avoided cleaning out table for at least 20mins! Complained about the steaks but didn't seem far to bothered. Still waiting for desserts to arrive!

User

After visiting Tropical World today my friend and I (39 weeks pregnant)and my children (aged 2 and 5) went to The Roundhay Fox for lunch. We were told there was a 30 minute wait for food which seemed reasonable at 12.15. My daughter ordered sausage, peas, chips and gravy and my son ordered sausage, rice and beans. They both came out after about 30 minutes but my son's rice was solid and still in the shape of the bag it had come out of. The beans were microwaved hard on top. We then waited a further 10 minutes for the adults' food. My friend and I had ordered from the lunch menu. She had ordered the burger but without the bun. It came without any of the accompaniments that it should have - no cheese or relish. My steak sandwich came but was inedible due to it being mainly gristle. Both were sent back. The burger returned but with no relish. My steak sandwich never returned. After a further 20 minutes I went to see where it was. By this time both children had finished their lunch without being offered any sauces or condiments. I had to go and search for ketchup for them as the waitress kept saying she would be back in a minute.

By this time everyone had now finished their food except me as I had still not received my sandwich. We had also ordered puddings at the same time as we had placed the original order. As I was now starving but everyone else had finished and the children were becoming restless we decided to leave and ask for a refund. The person we spoke to gave a cursory apology before refunding my sandwich and the puddings. We went elsewhere so that I could actually eat some food over an hour and a half after trying to eat at The Roundhay Fox. After asking for an address or phone number to lodge a complaint we were given a card for a customer satisfaction online survey rather than speaking to the landlord or manager as we had requested. I used to work here a long time ago and know how busy this place can be but was quite horrified at the poor level of service today.
