The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Description

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) was formed in 1947. It was descended from two older institutions, the Royal Military Academy (RMA) and the Royal Military College (RMC).

The RMA had been founded in 1741 at Woolwich to train gentlemen cadets for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers, and later for the Royal Corps of Signals and some for the Royal Tank Corps. It remained there until it was closed on mobilisation in 1939.

The RMC began in 1800 as a school for staff officers which later became the Staff College, Camberley. A Junior Department was formed in 1802, to train gentlemen cadets as officers of the Line. A new college was built at Sandhurst, into which the cadets moved in 1812. After 1860, the RMC succeeded the East India Company’s Military Seminary as the establishment where most officers of the Indian Army were trained. Following the abolition of the purchase system in 1870, attendance at Sandhurst became the usual route to a commission. The college was enlarged in 1912, when New College was built.

On the outbreak of the Second World War, Sandhurst became the home of 161 Infantry Officer Cadet Training Unit (RMC). This unit moved to Mons Barracks, Aldershot in 1942 and for the rest of the war Sandhurst was used solely as a Royal Armoured Corps Training Unit.

In the post-war reconstruction, the RMAS was set up to carry on the traditions of both the RMA and Sandhurst, and to train regular officers for the whole Army. Its two-year course included both military and academic subjects, and allowed for a continuity of the cadet body from one intake to another, as well as many extra-curricular activities. National Service and short service officers were trained at officer cadet schools (OCS).

After the end of conscription in 1960, Mons OCS continued in existence, training short service cadets, graduate entrants, and Territorials. In 1972, the functions of Mons were transferred to RMAS. Academic studies were reduced in scope and undertaken only by future regular officers, while all officer cadets undertook a six-month course, based on that at Mons. Subsequently, many other changes were made leading to the present system.

Ex Dynamic Victory is the final test for those on the Regular commissioning course, a culmination of all their training to assess whether they are capable of leading soldiers into battle. At the end of the gruelling exercise, if they have passed, they can wear their regimental berets (the regiments they are about to join) for the first time. They are now getting ready for their commissioning parade!

Ladies and gentlemen,
After a hard fought day that saw teams competing in the #AllArmsPaceStickingCompetition2018 in what felt like all four seasons, weather-wise, the scores were counted and the results were announced by the Commander Sandhurst Group at the conclusion of the day.
With only 3 points separating the top two All Arms teams and the Pakistan Military Academy wowing judges and spectators alike with their unique style of drill, it was a fantastic day on Old College... Parade Ground for everyone involved.
The final scores are attached, congratulations to: 1st Bn Scots Guards (All Arms Winning Team) Our own RMAS ‘Lord’ (All Arms Runners-Up Team) Pakistan Military Academy (International Winning Team) Bahrain Military Police (International Runners-Up Team) CSgt JayJay McEvoy WG (Best Sticker, aka ‘World Champion’) WO2 Ben Townley SG (Best Driver)

*Turn sound on*
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We made history earlier today in the Sergeants’ Mess at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst with the production of the first ever live streamed Draw for the #AllArmsPaceStickingCompetition2018, shown right here on Facebook.
... Sadly, as any soldier will tell you, no plan survives first contact with the enemy and on this occasion, despite all the hard work that went on behind the scenes to set up this event, we had technical delays at the start AND the sound failed us initially as well.
Fortunately - as any GOOD soldier will ALSO tell you - you must always have a second course of action ready and prepared and today was no different. The Draw was also recorded as well as being live streamed and so, in all its glory, over to Company Sergeant Major Roper Grenadier Guards...

Would just like to thank the lovely guards at RMAS who allowed us to bring a small group of Army Cadets in to have an impromptu visit yesterday after the National Swimming event.

Obviously this was an incredible experience for them and they were definitely a lot more buzzing about the visit than about the swimming! Two of the cadets with us were Basics, so to see such an amazing place so early in their cadet careers really helped them to appreciate the opportunities available.

One of the cadets has aspirations to become a Regular Officer when he's older so it was fantastic for him to have a look around too. Thankyou so much for giving them this chance!

Many thanks from Yorkshire N&W/Humberside and South Yorkshire ACF National Swimmers.

Whilst serving as Draughtsman to the Chief Instructor at the Army Apprentices School, Arborfield, 1958, we were given the job of producing gates for the RMA? I as draughtsman, designed them, and the apprentices in the blacksmiths shop manufactured them under the civillian instructor Mr "Busty" Lay. They were erected and we then paraded whilst HM the Queen drove through them to officially open them. The gates are still there to-day and I am proud to have been part of the RMA history.

We visited for heritage day on Sunday 18th June. I am in awe of the hundreds of military personnel that were there in the unbearable heat. All incredibly welcoming, polite and so knowledgeable.

We loved the interactiveness of the Gurka trail, it gave a welcome respite from the intense sun and was so interesting to see and learn about how to collect water, create traps, build shelters, learn about edible vegetation and how to make fire. The performances were brilliant too. Fun for all the family.

Thank you so much for giving us an insight into the military world and sharing your gorgeous grounds with the public.

The Royal military academy Sandhurst is one of the most prestigious military academies in the world. Where born leaders are polished and are made available with the most advanced leadership tools in order to understand, analyze and think of the bigger picture I mean out of the box. Considering the values and standards.

User

Taking raw individuals with pre conceived ideas and egos around what they think leadership is and turning them into well rounded evolving leaders and good human beings is not an easy task. But RMA Sandhurst does exactly that.

User

My step daughter started yesterday 10th September. I think she probably has the most interesting 5 weeks ahead of her. Everyone we met were very nice and enthusiastic about the new arrivals.

Good luck to the little blonde bombshell. Molly Coombes. ❤️

An absolutely amazing insight into Army Officer Training.

The Commandant's Parade was superb and made me feel a sense of both pride and respect for the British Army with how superbly presented the parade was.

The tour of the grounds after was a very educational experience along with very informative and insightful talks with the current officer cadets being invaluable.
