About The Salutation Inn

Superb Country Pub offering Great Pub food, local ales and a warm welcome!

The Salutation Inn Description

The Saluation’s history is vast and can be traced back to at least the 16th century. Across the road from the Inn stood a large tree for many years, this was known as the ‘hanging tree’ as it is thought that many convicts were hung in public however history suggests that this was sadly chopped down back in the 1960’s.

The ‘Sally’ as it is known by the locals, boasts an eventful past. In its early days it was a toll gate for the carriages’ travelling along the Fosse Way and the Tythe barn once housed horses overnight whilst its passengers were fed and watered in the Inn. The village of ‘The Gibb’ originates from the name of the toll booth crossing, The Gibraltar Turnpike.

Many films and period dramas have been set within the local area, the most famous being the award winneing film, War Horse directed by Steven Speilberg. Other productions include Dr Doolittle, Downton Abbey, Pride & Prejudice and Stardust.

The name ‘Castle Combe’ dates back to the Roman Times where a fort was built at the top of the hill & combe – This is an Anglo Saxon word for dip in the valley. Just 2 miles down the road from the ‘Sally’ is a 4, 000 year old long barrow burial site called Lugbury!

Inside the Salutation Inn you will find a beautiful Tythe barn, this is now used as part of our restaurant but is also perfect for large functions and weddings.

We have had a few people enquiring about bringing their own plates for Sunday lunch today.
Please do not bring your own plates; we have plenty of takeaway containers and can vouch for their cleanliness, as well as the hygiene within the pub.
We don't want to become an accidental source of cross-contamination, especially as we are serving both vulnerable people and local essential workers.
... When collecting takeaways please pull up outside the pub and call us on 01249 782 083 and we'll bring the food out to you.
We will be handling any beer containers with disposable gloves and sterilising our equipment after each use.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
